From Proto-Balto-Slavic *rugís, from Proto-Indo-European *Hrugʰís. Related to Lithuanian rugỹs, Latvian rudzis, Old Prussian rugis, Proto-Germanic *rugiz (see Old Norse rugr, English rye).
