Inherited from Proto-Philippine *takəp (cover), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *ta(ŋ)kəp, ultimately a meaning shift from Proto-Austronesian *takəp (to double in layer). Compare Kapampangan takap, Bikol Central takop, Hiligaynon takop, and Waray-Waray takop. See also Maranao tekep and Malay tekap.
