Synopsis

ACT ONE

It’s 1994 and Rock star, Jacqueline Miller, is on tour with her hit record, LOVIN’ THE LIFE. In the midst of a grueling tour schedule, she has agreed to kick off the gala re-opening of her beloved childhood roller rink, Windy City Skates. When her tour is suddenly cancelled and her love life becomes tabloid fodder, Jacqueline longs for a SIMPLER TIME traveling back to her childhood in 1977 (SKATING NATION). It’s here that she comes face-to-face with her 12 year old self, Jackie. Jacqueline remembers, that when she hit the rink floor all her worries melted away (WHITE HOT).

When Jackie’s perfect best friend, Meghan, is called to the floor for a Couples Skate, Jackie hopes that one day she’ll find a love who sees the real her (WHY CAN’T I BE HER). Three teenagers, Russ Reiner, Tonya Carson and Danny Myers, accost Jackie. Russ tells Jackie to tell her brother, Brad, that he’s looking for him and threatens Jackie with death if she returns to the rink. Jack takes the floor and shows his stuff (JACK’S STRUT).

Dinner at the Miller’s with Mom, Dad and Brad reveals why Russ Reiner threatened Jackie at the rink. Brad told Russ off when he began a verbal attack on his girlfriend, Tonya Carson. Brad agrees that Russ is crazy and Jackie says she’ll never return to the rink. Dad encourages her to face the enemy, and offers advice (DO DAMAGE).

Back at the hotel room, Jacqueline continues work on a new song when she receives a collect call from Blake. She confronts the rumors of his infidelity. Blake woos her back (BELIEVE) confirming that he’ll return for Saturday’s gig at Windy City Skates. Jackie enters sporting a brand new haircut— Mom’s voice calls her to the telephone with the news that a boy is on the line.

The boy of her dreams, Scotty Watkins, asks Jackie on a date to All-Skate Saturday. Beside herself with glee, Jackie and Jacqueline revel in the knowledge that Scotty seems to be falling for her (COULD IT BE).

Jackie calls Meghan and shares the news. Meghan invites Jackie to come over after dinner to plan her outfit and instructs her to bring her Ouija Board. Meghan calls Scotty Watkins and attempts to derail his date with Jackie.

Back at the dinner table, Brad storms in sporting a black eye. Brad recounts meeting up with Tonya Carson while cutting class at the playground. Tonya shares her strong feelings for Brad (SHAZIZZLE). Russ enters pulling them apart and clocks Brad in the face.

Meghan & Jackie play THE OUIJA BOARD. Meghan attempts to derail Jackie’s date with Scotty yet again. Jackie accuses Meghan of being jealous. Meghan scoffs with hurtful insults. Jackie storms out.

Jackie & Jacqueline ready themselves to meet Blake at the airport. When they arrive at O’Hare Airport, Blake is the last passenger to disembark. He appears to have been traveling with a romantic companion. Jackie convinces Jacqueline to ditch Blake at the airport and move on (LET’S GO).

Back at Windy City Skates, Meghan admits her jealousy. Jackie accepts the apology. Russ Reiner plies Tonya Carson with cocaine in exchange for beating up Jackie.

Scotty and Meghan piece together that Tonya loves Brad and Russ wants to murder Jackie and even the score. Tonya approaches Jackie (THE FIGHT 1).

ACT TWO

Jack picks up with the action (REPRISE SKATING NATION) The fight continues (THE FIGHT 2). Jackie uses the moves Dad taught her and wins.

Scotty and Jackie confess their feelings for each other (CRUSHIN’ ON YOU). Russ Reiner breaks their revelry threatening Jackie. Brad defends Jackie and Russ challenges him to a “skate off” (RUSS’S CHALLENGE). When Brad reveals that he doesn’t skate, Russ dares him to meet him at the quarry. Brad accepts.

Brad, Jackie, Meghan and Scotty make their way to Brad’s MG Midget when Tonya approaches the group. Tonya apologizes and offers to go with Brad to the quarry.  Brad and Tonya take off, with Scotty agreeing to walk the girls home.

While Mom frosts Jackie’s birthday cake, Dad canoodles and things heat up between the two (YOU’RE THE ONE). Jackie, Meghan and Scotty burst in announcing trouble at the quarry. Dad calls the police reaching the dispatcher, an old high school flame, Madeline Berry. Brad & Russ fight, with Tonya joining in. Back at the house, the group listens to a police scanner and learn that an MG Midget has been spotted over the quarry rim.

Back in 1994 , it’s the day of the gala re-opening of Windy City Skates. Jacqueline is home, reeling over breaking up with Blake. Wondering if she’ll ever find “the one”, Mom and Dad reassure her (SOMEDAY).

Jacqueline receives a dozen long stem red roses from a mystery sender. In a series of voice mail messages from both Brad and Blake, she learns the tour is back on track and Blake professes his love. Jacqueline calls Blake and Jackie questions why she’d consider getting back with him and begs Jacqueline to reconsider (FORWARD MOTION).

Windy City Skates looks and sounds (TURN IT UP) decidedly different. Jacqueline reunites with her past.  A decidedly plump, Meghan, greets Jacqueline and introduces her to the new rink owner, Tonya Carson. Brad and Tonya reconnect but not before the Slushy repairman, Russ Reiner, admits that he may have overreacted when he drove Brad’s MG Midget over the quarry rim. The town mayor, Danny Myers, introduces Jacqueline (LOVIN’ THE LIFE Reprise) and she cuts the band off in the middle of Blake’s sax solo. Jacqueline instructs Blake to sit out as she breaks up with him with her new song (YOU SAY YOU’RE SORRY).

Scotty Watkins arrives and reveals that he sent the roses. Jacqueline & Scotty pick up as if no time has passed since they last stood at the rink. Couples Skate is announced, a hit from 1977 (CRUSHIN’ ON YOU) dedicated to Dad from Madeline Berry and reuniting the gang at Windy City Skates. Jackie and Jacqueline rejoice in having found themselves again.
