  • curprev 23:0323:03, 10 May 2018Josephbyrd talk contribs 26,448 bytes +100 Shape-notes did not spontaneously sprout with the publication of an 1801 tune book. Paul Revere printed/published at least three shape-note books by William Billings, long before that year, including such popular songs as "Chester" ("Let Tyrants shake their iron rods") and "Lamentation Over Boston," William Billings (The Singing Master's Assistant, 1778), engraved, printed, and published by Paul Revere. The idea that shape-notes were first published in 1801 is clearly false. undo
