Revision as of 21:41, 10 February 2005

This page is only for listing images which are duplicates or otherwise unneeded. For copyright infringements, use Wikipedia:Copyright problems. For licensing issues that are not copyright infringements, use Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images.

Articles that have been listed for more than one week are eligible for deletion if either a consensus to do so has been reached or no objections to its deletion have been raised. Such images should be dealt with as soon as possible.

As per the speedy deletion policy, administrators can delete on sight "[a]n image which is a redundant (all bits the same or scaled-down) copy of something else on Wikipedia and as long as all inward links have been changed to the image being retained." This does not include visually similar pictures, such as PNG versions of JPEG images. Such images should be listed here instead. For the time being, this also does not include photos copied to Wikimedia Commons.

Deletion guidelines for administrators -- deletion log -- List of empty images

Listing instructions

To list an image on this page, simply add it to the bottom. If it is an obsoleted image, please also list the image that it is obsoleted by, in the format "[[:Image:Foo.jpg]] - obsoleted by [[:Image:Bar.jpg]]".

It would also be courteous to inform the uploader of the image that this has taken place by adding a message to his or her talk page.

If you remove an image from an article, you should list the article from which you removed it, so there can be effective community review of whether or not the image should be deleted. This is necessary because image pages do not remember the articles the images used to be used on.

Add the following message to the top of any image page listed on this page: {{ifd}}, which shows up as:

This template should only be used on file pages.

On this page, state the reasons that the image should be deleted. Some people like to use the following abbreviations:

  • AB (absentee uploader} - the uploader has not contributed to Wikipedia in a long time, and is probably unavailable to answer questions.
  • CV (copyright violation) - the image might be used in violation of copyright, or else there is no copyright info provided
  • NE (not English) - the image contains text that is not English.
  • OB (obsolete) - the image has been replaced by a better version.
  • OF (out-of-focus) - the image is blurry.
  • OR (orphan) - the image is not used on any pages in Wikipedia.
  • UE (unencyclopedic) - the image doesn't seem likely to be useful in an encyclopedia

Please sign any listing or vote you add, by adding this after your comment: ~~~~

Instructions for administrators

Before deleting an image, please make sure of the following:

  • That the image has been listed on this page for one week or longer
  • That no objections to its deletion have been raised, or that a consensus to delete has been reached
  • That the image is not used in any articles (note that "What links here" is not currently reliable)
  • That the image is not currently being processed as a copyright violation

To delete an image, open the image page and click either the link, "Delete all revisions of this image" or the usual "delete" tab at the top of the page. Either will work. (This was not the case in previous versions of the software.)

Also, please specify the reason for deletion in your deletion summary. Examples:

Orphaned and obsoleted, listed on IfD since (date)
Orphaned copyright violation, listed on IfD since (date)

If you delete an image listed on this page, please remove the listing and note your removal in your edit summary.

When deleting an image because an identically named image exists in the Wikimedia Commons, make sure to preserve the image description. Otherwise the image will still be shown but the page will also say "This page does not exist".

The "What links here" tool is broken for images. Do not rely on what links here to determine whether an image is unused! You must use the Wikipedia internal search engine, with all namespaces selected, to confirm that an image is unused in the English-language Wikipedia. You should also be alert for signs that the image is used in other languages, some of which use external links to include images from en. See BUG 85 for the current status of this issue.

Listings older than one week

These need additional information or more opinions before consensus can be determined.

Images moved to Commons

The image has been moved to the Commons, but not the image description page history. I'm not sure whether the page can be deleted here without violating the GFDL, so I'm saving these here until I know better what to do. Sybian images

  • Image:Tn toyslove angie.jpg, Image:Toyslove angie.jpg, Image:Tn sybian gmax1.jpg, Image:Tn sybian gmax2.jpg: advertisement/spam for sex toys. OR, CV (I don't believe the {{CopyrightedFreeUse}}.) This is a relisting of recently IfDed material, however I wasn't aware of their IfDing at the time, nor where a lot of other people I suspect. Their creator objected and as no one else commented they were kept for lack of consensus. I agree that such a quick relisting is unusual but hope that the community will allow it as the other images of the set were clearly deleted and I do believe there is a (strong) consensus for deleting these. --fvw* 01:57, 2005 Feb 4 (UTC)
  • Go to this link on toyslove.com and read the very top caption. That should put an end to copyright questions. Enough people have shown interest in keeping these images. In fact, someone went the extra mile to rubber stamp the toyslove.com url out so there definitely is value in ALL the images.--Buttysquirrel 23:04, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)
    • A few questions:
    1. Why don't you believe the ((CopyrightedFreeUse))? Apparently the copyright holder uploaded these, and he can, if he likes, give permission for anyone to use them in any way they want. I see no reason to doubt him unless there is evidence of some sort of copyright infringement.
I'll admit I don't have any strong arguments here, but the impression I got when (briefly) dealing with the user was that they were involved with the site but not the owner. I might be wrong though. (note that the original nomination had the same claim, which I copied because I felt the same way. Though that's not evidence ofcourse.)
    2. I think the urls are unencyclopedic, but I certainly wouldn't call them spam.
I would, though if you think spam need imply bulk then I'll settle for unsolicited commercial material.
    3. What on earth could you have against Image:Toyslove angie.jpg?
Well, for starters it's not used in any articles. Put it on commons if we want to keep it as a GFDL(-able) image. I can't think of any article it would be appropriate for. --fvw* 03:52, 2005 Feb 4 (UTC)
    4. If the URL were removed from the others, would you still want them deleted? – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 02:39, Feb 4, 2005 (UTC)
In their current form (sans URL), yes. Some of them might be useful for articles if edited down though (cropping off more than just the URL). I don't feel any great need to make such modifications myself however due to the bad taste the attempt at turning articles into ads left in my mouth. --fvw* 03:52, 2005 Feb 4 (UTC)
    • Löschen. I don't believe the {{CopyrightedFreeUse}} either, but if everyone else does, I'd just cloned out the site name on the latter two and was preparing to upload them over when I noticed that the ifd tag was back. —Korath (Talk) 02:29, Feb 4, 2005 (UTC)
      • Delete Image:Tn toyslove angie.jpg and anything that remains orphaned; neutral on the rest. —Korath (Talk) 14:10, Feb 5, 2005 (UTC)
      • I was thinking about doing this myself. If you were going to fix the images, why do you vote to delete them? Wouldn't it be better to fix them? – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 02:39, Feb 4, 2005 (UTC)
        • Fixing is better than leaving them alone, but deleting is better than fixing. There's doubt over on Talk:Sybian (where this is originated) whether the original uploader really does own the copyright; if he is the copyright holder, it seems likely that he'll raise a fuss if versions without the url appear; it's clear that the images were edited, especially in Image:Tn sybian gmax2.jpg; and Image:Tn toyslove angie.jpg and Image:Toyslove angie.jpg seem destined to remain orphaned. —Korath (Talk) 03:39, Feb 4, 2005 (UTC)
    • I stumbled on these images when the poster uploaded them, add them to the sex toys article and included a spam link to the page which is indicated in the images. That's when I listed them here. I can't see that they're anything but spam. I'm strongly considering VfDing Sybian, too. It's an ad. Löschen all of the images.RickK 05:15, Feb 4, 2005 (UTC)
      • I don't think you'll find much support for VfDing Sybian, but you should do it if you feel otherwise. I will continue to monitor Sybian despite your attempts.--Buttysquirrel 21:35, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)
    • If the uploader is the copyright holder, then they're spam. If he isn't, then they're copyvio. Delete either way. -- Cyrius| 05:32, 4 Feb 2005 (UTC)
      • Keep if URLs are removed from images. -- Cyrius| 21:10, 7 Feb 2005 (UTC)
    • As the one who originally listed those images that RickK missed the first time 'round: I do think it's spam; the mere fact that there are four such images where one would have sufficed is enough for me to classify that as spam. Furthermore, I consider images with embedded URLs advertisments, and those have no place in an encyclopedia. If the Sybian article needs an illustration, Image:Tn sybian gmax2.jpg without the URL could maybe be used, but only if its copyright and licensing status could be verified. But I'm not the least bit inclined to contact the owners of that thinly disguised hard-core porn site mentioned in the URL on these images. I think it highly unlikely that the image is PD: the owner would most probably not want anybody to crop off the URL. Therefore, I do not believe the {{PD}} tags. As a consequence of all this, I propose to delete these images. BTW, this also applies to Image:Tn topco-love-machine.jpg, which I just listed below. Lupo 07:43, 4 Feb 2005 (UTC)
    • Delete, agree with Cyrius, couldn't have put it better myself. Keep, if there are no URLs embedded. —Stormie 08:52, Feb 4, 2005 (UTC)
  • Image:Tn topco-love-machine.jpg dubious license claim, embedded URL. Also OR. See above. Lupo 07:43, 4 Feb 2005 (UTC)
    • Delete, as above. Keep, if there are no URLs embedded. —Stormie 08:52, Feb 4, 2005 (UTC)
  • If it can be assured that the images are indeed free-use, then I don't see a reason to delete. Keep. BLANKFAZE | (что??) 20:38, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Okay, everybody, let's try to be logical about this. None of us wants spam to stay on Wikipedia. But in our zeal to keep ads out, let's not throw away a useful image or two.
It seems to me that there are several relevant questions here. One would be, is it acceptable for images on Wikipedia to contain urls to commercial sites? And the consensus, clearly, is no. That much is settled. Either the images will have the URLs removed, or they will be deleted. Fine.
A second question would be, are the images tagged correctly? The uploader, charmingly named User:Buttysquirrel, claims to be the copyright holder, and claims to release them into the public domain. Similarly, I claim to be the copyright holder of Image:Gate ajar.jpg, and to have released it under the GFDL. I can't prove to you that I'm the copyright holder, but it's our longstanding policy to believe uploaders unless there's evidence to the contrary. (Otherwise we'd have to delete a lot of images.) And no one has provided any evidence that Buttysquirrel is not the copyright holder, other than second-guessing his motivations ("the owner would most probably not want anybody to crop off the URL"). You could say that I most probably would not want anybody to copy-and-paste a porn image onto my gate picture, but since I released it under the GFDL, I can't stop someone from doing just that. Similarly, since Buttysquirrel tagged them PD, he has no legal recourse to stop anyone from removing the urls.
A third question could be, are the images useful? The images are of decent quality. There is a notable lack of images in the Sex toy article.
So after that analysis, I believe that Image:Tn sybian gmax1.jpg and Image:Tn topco-love-machine.jpg should be kept with the urls removed, and the others should be deleted as obsolete and unneeded. – Quadell (talk)(sleuth) 14:57, Feb 4, 2005 (UTC)
I would like to address your questions/arguments.
For Argument 1) see Image:Sylvia_Saint_001.jpg. Is this permissable according to Wikipedia policy? If so, then I suggest you reexamine my images any apply the same policy, otherwise I can start to sense the "hypocrxxx" word.
For Argument 2) Go to this link on toyslove.com and read the very top caption. That should address any copyright questions.
For Argument 3) I think enough people with a genuine interest in the aforementioned articles have expressed support. There have been several comments that the images are good quality and on topic.--Buttysquirrel 23:38, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)
For the sake of argument, I've uploaded my url-free versions over Image:Tn sybian gmax1.jpg and Image:Tn sybian gmax2.jpg. I'll look at Image:Tn topco-love-machine.jpg a bit later. —Korath (Talk) 17:57, Feb 4, 2005 (UTC)
Actually, you only did your magic on the first one, which I've added to Sybian. dbenbenn | talk 00:34, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Images cache weirdly. I had to go to the actual image location, as given by clicking on the date link on the image page, and refresh there to get the new one to show up. (I've also just uploaded a url-free Image:Tn topco-love-machine.jpg, which'll probably need similar treatment if you've viewed the old one.) —Korath (Talk) 00:59, Feb 5, 2005 (UTC)
My bad. By the way, how do you do that, taking the URL out? You can only barely see that anything was there at all. dbenbenn | talk 03:42, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)
The clone tool, amateurishly wielded. Here's a tutorial. —Korath (Talk) 14:10, Feb 5, 2005 (UTC)
Thanks. dbenbenn | talk 21:40, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Damn! I am quite impressed that I have sparked dialogue with those images I uploaded. Once and for all, the I own the copyright to those images and i posted it for free use. Quite frankly, i have an operation to run (hire models, shoot, edit, and program my site) so I don't have all the time in the world to argue why we should do this or that. So if you don't hear from me for several days, do not take it for granted that I just uploaded some stolen images and walked off on a copyright violation. For those nay-sayers out there questioning if I did take these photos, stop it.

The sybian article looks a lot better now with that image. Also, if you supported me on this, go to the toyslove.com site and hit me up for a free 30 day account by going to the contact us page. I don't normally give these out except to my friends in the real world, but I have tons of bandwidth and your genuine interest in the Sybian warrants a reward ;)

I'm not done talking here because I'm busy building a top quality product, but I'll be back soon. Excuse me for now... --Buttysquirrel 03:57, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Oh, while your at it, why don't you guys discuss either deleting this image or removing it's url; Image:Sylvia_Saint_001.jpg. I certainly don't want to be the only one targeted here. --Buttysquirrel 18:50, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I guess we're more tolerant of bomis.com links, since our God-King owns that company. Anyway, that image doesn't exist on Wikipedia; it's at the Commons. dbenbenn | talk 21:40, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Ha! The irony of it all....even the cofounder of Wikiville advertises his nudist site here. Well, I have no argument there since I didn't cofound this site. This place is starting to look like a farce.--Buttysquirrel 22:09, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I just wanted to added that I have recieved an email from [email protected] which was signed "Buttysquirrel". So I do in fact now believe that the uploader is in fact who he claims to be. BLANKFAZE | (что??) 21:31, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)
