:::Probably the 'famous' ones like California, New York (even that will cause confusion with NYC...), Alaska and Texas, may be known or recognizable to the non-US layman reader but the majority of the 50 states are not, I have an interest in geography and I could easily name more states than the average American high school student (I can name all 50) but I spend a lot of my time at work (working for a multinational) answering questions like "is Louisiana a city?" or "What state is Arizona in?"
