=Early years=
Reb Mendel Futerfas was born in 5667, in Pleshenitz, near Minsk, White Russia. His father passed away before his birth; he was named after his own father. The young orphan grew up in the home of his grandmother Rochel Leah. being a childhood friend of Rebbetzin Shterna Sara the wife of the Rebbe Rashab. When she visited Lubavitch and stayed in the Rebbes home in 5675, she brought along eight-year-old Mendel, and the young child merited to be received for yechidus (privet audience). The Rebbe blessed him to be “an ehrlicher Yid, a pious Jew, with long life.” [Years later, as Reb Mendel languished in Siberian labor camps, his firm belief in the Rebbe's bracha gave him the strength to carry on.] This visit became a yearly custom; the last time he merited to see the Rebbe Rashab was when he was thirteen years old, over Tishrei 5680, half a year before the Rebbes histalkus. A few months later, Reb Mendel left home to learn in the underground yeshiva in Kremenchug; when the secret operation was exposed, his wanderings began, spending time in the yeshivos of Kharkov, Vitebsk, and Nevel. During his years in yeshiva, Reb Mendel studied with a number of legendary mashpi’im; Reb Yechezkel (“Chatche”) Feigin and Reb Itche der Masmid among others. However, his closest relationship was with the Mashpia Reb Zalman Moshe Hayitzchaki. A deep bond developed between the two; Reb Mendel never missed a shiur or a farbrengen, and Reb Zalman Moshe took special notice and care for his talmid, raising him—in his unique manner—to live up to the ideals of a bochur in Tomchei Temimim. The distinct style of Reb Zalman Moshe was characteristic of Reb Mendel as well. Always lively and vivacious, had a passion for a Chassidisheh farbrengen.

He was known for telling stories, particularly from his incarceration, and deriving lessons from everything he heard and saw there. He once said that although playing cards was against prison rules, his prison-mates would always play in their cell. The prison guard could see them playing; however, when he came in, the cards would be gone. As hard as he would search, the guard could not find the illicit items. When he finally gave up and promised not to bother the prisoners if they would only tell him what they did with the cards, they told him that every time he came in, they would slip the cards into his own pocket and then pick-pocket the cards back before he left. Futerfas learned from this that sometimes we go looking far and long when we have what we want in our own pocket.

Teachings

He was known for telling stories, particularly from his incarceration, and deriving lessons from everything he heard and saw there. He once told that although playing cards was against prison rules, his prison-mates would always play in their cell. Futerfas learned from this that sometimes we go looking far and long, when we have what we want in our own pocket.
