This file should be tagged PD-US, have its old revisions undeleted and be and moved to Commons.

Obviously, the original Steamboat Willie film was published in 1928, and is thus in the public domain in the US. This poster is an image from that film, plus the words "WALT DISNEY'S MICKEY MOUSE in STEAMBOAT WILLIE." The addition of the words is not copyrightable.

The only potential copyright in this image would be in the colorization of the frame (if anything). But see this news story about a Mickey Mouse poster from 1928 with this color scheme (reportedly the oldest poster of the character).

Since the color scheme was extant in 1928, there can be no valid claim that the colorization has its own copyright. The color scheme existing on a 1928 poster makes this image, to whatever extent it is new (as a synthesis of the two 1928 elements), below the threshold of originality.

The result of the discussion was: keep. At issue is the the replaceability of the the modern image of Mickey Mouse with a free version. There is no dispute on the existence of free images of Mickey Mouse. The key question is whether these free images would serve the same encyclopedic purpose. The non-free usage rationale for this image states this is being used for visual identification. So the question of replaceability hinges on whether a free image can serve as visual identification. The case for keeping this image for visual identification points to the modern image as the most widely known by our readers. Two alternate sources have been identified. There is the Steamboat Willie version of the image (c:File:Mickey Mouse.png), and there are derivative images from a 1928 poster (c:File:Mickey Mouse Color Stock Poster (Celebrity Productions era, 1928).jpg, c:File:Mickey mouse.svg). The case for removing this image for visual identification points out that Disney have made use of the Steamboat Willie image in the animation studio logo so it is not obscure and unknown, and the poster version of Mickey is sufficiently similar in appearance. Give that either of these free images would allow reader's to identify Mickey Mouse, this image does not meet WP:NFCC#1 for the purpose of visual identification.

During the discussion, the issue of use of the image as part of the changes to the character depiction was brought up. FFD does consider if changing the non-free usage rationale would bring an image in compliance with policy. The case was made that this image is covered by the commentary about the changes to the character's design. The article does cover the design changes, and does not have this version of Mickey Mouse illustrated in the design. Used in this manner, the image would be compliant with the non-free content criteria. The non-free rationale's purpose would need to reflect this usage. Löschen I feel this could be replaced by a user-colourised version of the Public Domain Steamboat Willie rendition of Mickey. At the end of the day, they are all the same cartoon mouse we all know and love as he's that recognisable so I say that this non-free rendition is redundant now that a freely available rendition of Mickey exists. I revise my earlier remark, did some more research this morning. It looks like there is a poster from 1928 that the 50th anniversary edition was based on (though the hat in the SVG is blue instead of green?). Interestingly enough, there is also another version of Mickey with yellow gloves. I still don't think this violates WP:NFCC#1, but it is good to note these things for the future. Keep The page has several images detailing the character's design changes over the years, even if it's not as drastic as some characters have changed it wouldn't make sense to keep only pics of his oldest version, or to only delete this image while keeping other non-free images showing Mickey's evolution. It looks like it's pretty tied for keep vs delete and I sorta agree that the white faced version is pretty recognizable still, so I'll just say if delete wins, I think it's best to use an image that isn't the one of him with the hat and steering wheel – as I said in another comment, it's not that representative of Mickey outside of Steamboat Willy, and I've already seen enough misinformation about him only being PD if he has the hat. Delete The character hasn't changed beyond recognition since his 1928 iteration (and also it's not like the Steamboat Willie version is obscure or anything; Disney has long continued using that version of the character in their animation studio's production logo). Delete for these purposes, keep if the image can be reintegrated in a fair-use manner elsewhere in the article - Mickey Mouse isn't a character like Amy Rose whose design changed so drastically between Sonic CD and Sonic Adventure as to be barely recognisable. The only real difference between the Steamboat Willie design and the modern design is the addition of red shorts and white gloves. Additionally Steamboat Willie is probably the most famous theatrical short Mickey Mouse has appeared in. I think the problem with the Steamboat Willy images people are suggesting as replacements is the inclusion of the hat. It's an iconic part of the short but it's not really representative of Mickey outside of that. I was expecting to be a keep on this, since the article has an entire history about the evolution of the character's design and moving the newly PD version into the infobox would probably mean moving this version into the section about this design. That doesn't seem to be the case though, nothing in the "Television and later films" section suggests that this specific version is important, and there's nothing in the "Design" section that's not already covered by other examples. Matrix's rationale doesn't make sense to me since a lot of their recent designs are close to the original Steamboat Willie version: the last theatrical cartoon version from Get a Horse!, Paul Rudish's version, and the flipbook intro for all recent Disney animated films (which is literally from Steamboat Willie). hinnk (talk) 21:39, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Though I agree that there are similarities between both the modern and classic styles, using the Steamboat Willie design would be a drastic change, since some characteristics of that design (the coloring, gloveless hands, and hat especially) can be different enough that they do not reflect his normal appearance in most media. Keep - Wikipedia should use the most recognizable version of the character available. Considering the many changes that Mickey Mouse has had over the years, especially considering those changes have been discussed in reliable sources anyway, the image is useful for the project as a whole. So this file was an overwrite of File:Memorial plaque to Professor Porfiriev - Institute of Geological Sciences, Kiev.jpg which was originally at File:Desk.jpg before it was moved (see log). The original file (File:Memorial plaque to Professor Porfiriev - Institute of Geological Sciences, Kiev.jpg) was PD-self, then this file overwrote the original file. I would think that by overwriting the original file, the author (User:Jcorbet4) released this file as PD-self. However, @Pppery: disagrees, hence I am listing this at FFD. Cheers, — MATRIX! This image (which initially represented the standard edition of Keyshia Cole's Woman to Woman album) is rarely used in certain markets, platforms or even when the album is being discussed, as the deluxe edition cover (File:Keyshia Cole - Woman to Woman (Deluxe).jpg) is rather used instead nearly every single time. Keep because the deluxe edition cover was recently speedy deleted after being a recreation after a deletion discussion, Wikipedia:Files for deletion/2012 October 12#File:Keyshia Cole Woman to Woman Deluxe.jpg. The covers are also similar enough to only justify having one per WP:NFCC#3a and the original version is preferred per Template:Infobox album. Also, this discussion was not nominated correctly, the file was never tagged with the template about this discussion, the original uploader was never notified and since the image is still in use, the article was not tagged with a caption leading to this discussion.
