widest part of the Mississippi

Unless my geography fails me, Lake Winnibigoshish is on the Mississippi and is wider than Pepin. However, it is in the headwaters area and not on a portion of the river usually considered navigable (though people do). It seems to me that the claim in the article should be removed or qualified.
