The Des Moines Capitols, were a professional ice hockey team in Des Moines, Iowa. They were a member of the International Hockey League from 1972 to 1975. The Des Moines Oak Leafs, were renamed the Capitols in 1972. The Des Moines Oak Leafs were a member of the United States Hockey League from 1961 to 1963 and the International Hockey League from 1963 to 1972.

In 1973 - 74, the Capitols were awarded the International Hockey League, Fred A. Huber Trophy, for winning the League Regular Season Champianship, with a record of 45-25-6 for 96 points. This was the best record ever for a Des Moines based IHL team, which was always hindered by the toughest travel schedule in the league. The Capitols continued their winning ways by defeating the Saginaw Gears 4-2 to win the 1974 Turner Cup. This was manager, Ken Wilson's, second Turner Cup win, coming 10 years after the Toledo Blades in 1964. In 1974 Capitol player Peter Mara was awarded the Leo P. Lamoureux Memorial Trophy, awarded for being the league's leading scorer and the James Gatschene Memorial Trophy, for outstanding playing ability and sportsmanlike conduct, over the course of the regular season by the league coaches. Teammate Frank Demarco won the Gary F. Longman Memorial Trophy, for rookie of the year in 1974, following Capitol's, Danny Gloor's win in 1973.

Home games were played at the Oak Creek Ice Arena, which is now known as 95KGGO Arena.

The Des Moines Oak Leafs and Des Moines Capitols names are now used for the two high school hockey teams in the Des Moines area.
