The hotel is called "derelict" just before the fire happened, but it was active enough to attract a large group of Swedish tourists and at least two American tourists. I understand that it no longer qualified as a luxury hotel, but "derelict" seems perhaps too strong a word. Perhaps "run down" or "dilapidated" or some other translation of the Dutch term? ==Cafe or Furniture Store==

Was the space below used as furniture store or a cafe at the time of the fire? The information is contradictory. I understand that it had been both, but what was its purpose when the event occurred?

"The café-restaurant was closed at the end of 1974 and its location was subsequently rented to the furniture store Inden.[1]]"

"About 6:20 am, the hotel staff were preparing for breakfast service, when one of them noticed smoke that seemed to be coming from the freight elevator (which had not been used since the café-restaurant on the ground floor had closed the previous evening)."

"Derelict"?

[edit]

The hotel is called "derelict" just before the fire happened, but it was active enough to attract a large group of Swedish tourists and at least two American tourists. I understand that it no longer qualified as a luxury hotel, but "derelict" seems perhaps too strong a word. Perhaps "run down" or "dilapidated" or some other translation of the Dutch term? Cullen328 Let's discuss it 00:26, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, dilapidated is a better word. I am sometimes struggling with English words and Google Translate is no help then. Thanks! SpeakFree (talk)(contribs) 01:20, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Feel free to discuss the connotations of English words with me at any time. It is truly a pleasure to collaborate with you and the other editors here on this article, sad though the topic is. I hope that it will be only the first of many. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 04:47, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Fair-use files

[edit]

Per WP:FUC, it is preferable for us to cut down on the number of fair-use files in this article. Defending the image of the firetruck under FUC 8 would be difficult, although I think the picture of the building itself and the fire from the air may be easier to write a FUR for. Crisco 1492 (talk) 07:24, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

OK I have removed the image of the firetruck, it's not that vital to the article. The other ones should stay though as they are needed to depict the hotel and the fire. If you see any other problems please let me know. Thank you. SpeakFree (talk)(contribs) 11:54, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • It is looking better. I'd suggest strengthening the fair-use rationales for the remaining pictures. I'm pretty bad at writing them myself, so maybe a look at some featured articles could help you out. Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:20, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Swedish victims

[edit]

User:SpeakFree asked on svwp for additional information from Swedish sources. Though a study of original Swedish newspapers from the period probably would be rewarding there seems to be little information that has entered the internet. Here however is an article published by the Swedish daily paper Aftonbladet from 1998 which lists the five large fires involving Swedes and includes the one at Hotel Polen. According to this source the number of Swedish victims was 17. /FredrikT (talk) 12:27, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your help! I'll put that in the article. SpeakFree (talk)(contribs) 15:38, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

GA Reassessment

[edit]
This discussion is transcluded from Talk:Hotel Polen fire/GA2. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the reassessment.

Reviewer was a sockpuppet of a long-term abuser long before 24 December 2011, see: Wikipedia:Long-term_abuse/Mattisse#2012 and Talk:Hotel_Polen_fire/GA1. Targje (talk) 18:46, 9 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Closing comment

[edit]

So far as I know, there is no automatic justification for revoking GA status because a long-ago reviewer was a sockpuppet. If there are issues with the quality of the article, in particular, if it falls short of the GA criteria in any area, then they should have been listed here, so they could be addressed.

This reassessment has been open for over six months, and Targje, who opened, has not edited on Wikipedia since late March. Under the circumstances, I am closing the reassessment as "kept", since there is no criterion failure listed that would indicate that it should be delisted. Anyone is free, of course, to open a new reassessment if they find such issues with the article per the instructions at WP:GAR. BlueMoonset (talk) 00:57, 18 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
