Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the [[Wikipedia:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team|Wikipedia 1.0 team]] for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were [[Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Article selection|selected based on their assessed importance and quality]], then article ''versions'' (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the [[WikiTrust]] algorithm.

== Good article reassessment for [[Crusading movement]] ==
I've noticed that on the pages connected with the controversy about [[Daniel Goldhagen]]'s writing - [[Hitler's Willing Executioners]], [[Hans-Ulrich Wehler]], [[Hans Mommsen]] [[Eberhard Jäckel]], and also the historian [[Theodor Schieder]], there is reference made to "Fred Kautz", a Canadian historian. He makes some fairly strong comments about some of the people mentioned above. Because of this I checked out who he was, puzzled that he didn't have a wiki article. It turns out he's a "freelance" writer, not an appointed academic, who has written [http://www.amazon.com/German-Historians-Hitlers-Executioners-Goldhagen/dp/1551642123/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpt_1 two] [http://www.amazon.com/Im-Glashaus-Zeitgeschichte-Fred-Kautz/dp/3936049343/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpi_2 books]. The first is the attack on Goldhagen's critics, published by [http://www.blackrosebooks.net/ a minor non-academic publishing house], and the second, written in German in 2004 appears to be unnotable - certainly ignored in English. Should his views be given such weight, especially in the HWE page? [[User:VsevolodKrolikov|VsevolodKrolikov]] ([[User talk:VsevolodKrolikov|talk]]) 04:23, 27 September 2010 (UTC)

== [[Talk:Anti-Normanism#Requested_move_22_May_2024]] ==
Hi I'm a big fan and admirer of European History. I was looking the Task Force and Project listings to find one that sounded interesting. I was wondering what are the steps to becoming a member of this Task Force, I'd be eager to donate time to help out. I understand that I'm a fairly new Wikipedia User and that may cause a little apprehension, but I'm really eager to help out and I'd really appreciate any feedback anyone could give me. Thanks! (so you know, I had an account that I started last year and that I was a big contributor on but I lost my password so I started this account a few days ago.) [[Template talk:Citation#Implementation|Recent changes were made to citations templates]] (such as {{tl|citation}}, {{tl|cite journal}}, {{tl|cite web}}...). In addition to what was previously supported (bibcode, doi, jstor, isbn, ...), templates now support arXiv, ASIN, JFM, LCCN, MR, OL, OSTI, RFC, SSRN and Zbl. Before, you needed to place {{para|id|{{tlx|arxiv|0123.4567}}}} (or worse {{para|url|http://arxiv.org/abs/0123.4567}}), now you can simply use {{para|arxiv|0123.4567}}, likewise for {{para|id|{{tlx|JSTOR|0123456789}}}} and {{para|url|http://www.jstor.org/stable/0123456789}} → {{para|jstor|0123456789}}.

I have nominated [[Middle Ages]] for a [[Wikipedia:Featured article review/Middle Ages/archive1|featured article review here]]. I know I haven't been involved much lately, but I decided to boldy implement the extended quality parameters, in part because some were actually in use. I just noticed that myself along with 34 others, including the founder of the project, were removed with [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:WikiProject_European_history&diff=next&oldid=268759074 this vandal edit] in 2009 and nobody every reverted it! I just copy-pasted the old user list, so we're all back. If someone actually wants to move all the users to a subpage or even clean up the list by removing banned/non-existent users and maybe moving inactive users (based on Wikipedia actions, not activity for the project which is nearly impossible to measure) to a separate subsection, then go for it.--[[User:Doug|Doug.]]([[User talk:Doug|talk]] <small>•</small> [[Special:Contributions/Doug|contribs]]) 19:49, 5 July 2011 (UTC)

== Looking for help citing the following ==

Hi,

I am working towards overall improvements to the [[Treaty of Versailles]] article. The following is from the territorial changes section. I have not been able to find any information that backs it up, yet it does not seem prudent to just delete it since it does add some background context. Can anyone confirm if the overall points are correct and at the same time provide some inline citations to support the paragraph?

"Germany′s borders in 1919 had been established nearly 50 years earlier, at [[Unification of Germany|the country′s official establishment in 1871]]. Territory and cities in the region had changed hands repeatedly for centuries, including at various times being owned by the [[Austro-Hungarian Empire]], [[Kingdom of Sweden]], [[Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth|Kingdom of Poland]], and [[Kingdom of Lithuania]]. However, Germany laid claim to lands and cities that it viewed as historically "Germanic" centuries before Germany′s establishment as a country in 1871. Other countries disputed Germany′s claim to this territory. In the peace treaty, Germany agreed to return disputed lands and cities to various countries."

== World War I reparations ==

Hi, I have already posted this elsewhere, but have so far gained little feedback. As the reparations article links to this project, I am hoping some members will be able to help.

I am currently working on the [[World War I reparations]] article. I have hit a bump on Bulgarian reparations. so far, I have established the following:

1 - Treaty of Neuilly established that Bulgaria had to pay 2.250 billion [[Gold franc]]s in reparations.(Treaty of Neuilly, Article 121)<br>
2 - In 1923, the Bulgarian reparation sum was "revised downwards" to 550 million gold francs "plus a lump sum payment of 25 million francs for occupation costs".(Marks, Myths of Reparations, pp. 234-5)<br>
3 - Between the treaty signing and April 1922, 173 million gold francs were paid.
4 - Between 1925 and 1929, Bulgaria paid a further 41 million gold francs, before reparations were abandoned at the Lausanne conference of 1932.

Does anyone have any additional information (including sources) to expand the above, especially in the following two areas:
1 - Do the above figures represent total Bulgarian reparation payment, and if not what were they?
2 - Did an event, such as the [[Dawes Plan]] for example, occur to revise down the Bulgarian reparation payments?

== Leaflet for Wikiproject European History at Wikimania 2014 ==

[[File:Project Leaflet WikiProject Medicine back and front v1.png|thumb|right|550px]]
Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____

• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost
<br><br>
The deadline for submissions is 1st July 2014
<br><br>
For more information or to sign up for one for your project, go to:

== Comment on the WikiProject X proposal ==

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please '''[[meta:Grants:IEG/WikiProject X|review the proposal here]]''' and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my [[User talk:Harej|talk page]]. Thank you for your time! <small>(Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.)</small> [[User:Harej|Harej]] ([[User talk:Harej|talk]]) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

== Romanian Revolution template ==

Hey everyone! I was looking at [[Template:2014 Ferguson unrest]] and thought it was pretty crazy that there wasn't one for the [[Romanian Revolution]]. I've started one at [[User:Yaksar/Template:Romanian Revolution]] but before I put it into any article space I thought it would be good to get some help in fleshing it out more to make it more logically structured. If you want to help out, feel free to do so there, or discuss it on the talk page. Thanks!--[[User: Yaksar|Yaksar]] [[User talk: Yaksar|(let's chat)]] 00:40, 17 October 2014 (UTC)

== The relation of the Allies with Hungary at the Paris Peace conference ==

In the article [[Treaty of Trianon]] I found the text below:

''The treaty was dictated by the Allies rather than negotiated and the Hungarians had no option but to accept its terms.[11] The Hungarian delegation signed the treaty under protest''

Aren't the above facts self-implied? As far as I know, after any military conflict the winners dictate the terms of the peace treaties to the losers (and don't negotiate with the defeated side when taking the decisions).

So, is it necessary to include the phrase above?

== WikiProject X is live! ==

[[File:WikiProject X icon.svg|100px|right|link=Wikipedia:WikiProject X]]

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that '''[[Wikipedia:WikiProject X|WikiProject X]]''' is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, [[Wikipedia:WikiProject X|check us out]]! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

'''Note:''' To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to [[Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter]]. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

I can see a very large opportunity to easily create a high volume of good quality articles quickly. I have done [https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiProject_UNESCO/Create_Biosphere_Reserve_Wikipedia_articles_from_UNESCO_descriptions a small project with open license text from UNESCO] as a proof of concept, any thoughts, feedback or endorsements (on the Meta page) would be greatly appreciated.

== WikiProject collaboration notice from the [[WP:WPPORT|Portals WikiProject]] ==

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{tl|Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found '''[[Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Portals#AWB_team_please_tackle_maintenance_run_on_intro_sections|here]]'''.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members '''[[Wikipedia:WikiProject_Portals#Specific_portal_maintainers|here]]''', noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

=== Background ===

On April 8th, 2018, an [[Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)/RfC: Ending the system of portals|RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace]]. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an [[Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2018-05-24/WikiProject report|article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject]].

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Portals/Newsletter archive|newsletter archive]].

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the [[WT:WPPORT|WikiProject's talk page]].

== A new newsletter directory is out! ==

A new '''[[Template:Newsletters|Newsletter directory]]''' has been created to replace the [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:List_of_newsletters&oldid=891896284 old, out-of-date one]. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like [https://species.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page WikiSpecies]), please include it in the directory! How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? This started as a one-article issue report, but looking around I see that the problem is pretty common (in short: conflicting "preceding/following era" links in infoboxes, navboxes, leads, and article bodies).

It needs a site-wide solution (perhaps a cross-wikiproject guideline or at least a [[WP:PROJPAGE]] with some advice in it).<br /><span style="white-space:nowrap;font-family:'Trebuchet MS'"> — [[User:SMcCandlish|'''SMcCandlish''']] [[User talk:SMcCandlish|☏]] [[Special:Contributions/SMcCandlish|¢]] 😼 </span> 10:36, 16 November 2019 (UTC)

== Free re-licensing of online material by [[University and State Library Düsseldorf]] ==

Hello, today I received an email telling me that nearly all of the scans of old books that are available online (at [https://digital.ub.uni-duesseldorf.de/ digital.ub.uni-duesseldorf.de]) have been re-licensed under a PD / CC0 license by the [[University and State Library Düsseldorf]].<br/>
Previously I had asked them why many of their scans of books in the public domain were published online with a "non-commercial" limitation in their licenses. If you have any idea where else to announce / advertise this new availability of their online material, please tell me or publicize it yourself. --[[User:ΟΥΤΙΣ|ΟΥΤΙΣ]] ([[User talk:ΟΥΤΙΣ|talk]]) 16:30, 17 June 2021 (UTC)
:{{u|ΟΥΤΙΣ}}, That's great news! However, since book contents are two-dimensional, there is no separate copyright for scanning them. Even before this switch it would have been possible to upload using {{tl|PD-Art}} or {{tl|PD-scan}}[https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:PD-scan]. ::That's my legal understanding too, {{u|Buidhe}}, even according to current German laws. But I have seen many online scans being hosted by various institutions that arbitrarily impose limitations on scans of public domain works. This often borders on [[copyfraud]], but sometimes lazyness, misinformation or indifference might play a role, too.

== Lloyd's Register Foundation, Heritage & Education Centre uploads 5000 documents to Wikimedia Commons ==

Hi WikiProject European History,

The Lloyd’s Register Foundation, Heritage & Education Centre have just uploaded 5005 documents from our Ship Plan and Survey Report Collection to Wikimedia Commons that may be of interest to you and your research on European history. The ingestion is comprised of 16 boxes and accounts for 1082 ships across 184 unique places of build from around the globe.

The documents include original handwritten correspondence from Lloyd's Register surveyors, ship plans and even a small selection of photographs. Examples include an annual report for ''Fiery Cross'', a wreck report for ''Highwave'', and cabin plan for the ''City of Simla''.
In addition to the Ship Plan and Survey Report Collection, we are also beginning to ingest every edition of the Lloyd’s Register of Shipping until 1909 as well as a percentage of the First and Famous Collection, the world’s most iconic ships from within our collection. We will be sure to keep you updated on the progress of this next step.

Browse the full collection [https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:LRFHEC here.]

We would really welcome some support for the resources and encourage you to share our documents on Wikipedia.

== User script to detect unreliable sources ==

{{Main|User:Headbomb/unreliable}}
I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to [[WP:URS|unreliable sources]] and [[predatory journal]]s. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the [[Wikipedia:User scripts/Most imported scripts|39th most imported script on Wikipedia]]. The idea is that it takes something like
*John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14. (<code><nowiki>John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.</nowiki></code>)
and turns it into something like
* John Smith "{{highlight|[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]|pink}}" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{tl|cite web}}, {{tl|cite journal}} and {{tl|doi}}.

The script is mostly based on [[WP:RSPSOURCES]], [[WP:NPPSG]] and [[WP:CITEWATCH]] and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is '''not a script to be mindlessly used''', and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at [[User:Headbomb/unreliable]]. Questions, comments and requests can be made at [[User talk:Headbomb/unreliable]].
