:Just finished Murder Without Hatred by Anton Weiss-Wendt, and am half way through Pax Romana by Adrian Goldsworthy, interesting book about whether it was actually real or just self serving propaganda to justify brutal conquest. ::I’ll check them out, the second one sounds especially interesting. Papers about animal behaviour mostly, but have been trying out 19th Century German literature as background for the later stuff I’ve read and enjoyed. ~ cygnis insignis 11:18, 15 January 2022 (UTC)

While communist ideology indeed was used to justify mass murder, especially, during Red Terror and Great Purge, and yes, obviously, Mao and Pol Pot followed their understanding of Marxist-Leninist dogma, this is very complicated. First of all, the entire "communist regimes" story of 20th century was created by Russia/USSR. Hence, some historians/philosophers (for example, Nikolay Berdyaev) considered this to be the story of Soviet colonialism (aka velikoderzhavny shovinism). He wrote: "<small>The Russian people did not achieve their ancient dream of Moscow, the Third Rome. ... Instead of the Third Rome in Russia, the Third International was achieved, and many of the features of the Third Rome pass over to the Third International. The Third International is also a Holy Empire, and it also is founded on an Orthodox faith. The Third International is not international, but a Russian national idea"</small>" Secondly, according to some other historians (let's say Abdurakhman Avtorkhanov and Yuri Felshtinsky), that was all due to the political system based on the power of secret services, rather than of the Communist party. That second point was captured by Mikhail Lermontov in his Farewell, Unwashed Russia in 19th century already. Only these two important points/trends (rather than communist ideology) can explain the aggressive course by Russian government today. Overall, the historical analogy here is obviously Third Reich , . ::That's interesting, I've not considered that viewpoint, and certainly one of the causes beyond ideology or leadership that led to the mass killings that occurred under some communist regimes. I'll have to look into it further. Hope you will be back soon as things are resolved for you, as you have great insight and perspective. Take care. --Nug (talk) 18:31, 25 January 2022 (UTC)
:::One of these reasons: I do not want to be a part of editing any pages that will deliver a blatant misinformation to a reader (and these pages definitely will deliver misinformation based on discussions, POV and the level of understanding of such subjects by participants, etc.). But more important, I must focus on my work. I am so far behind ... .
