Character history

Childhood and adolescent years

The children of Dr. Marlena Evans and Roman Brady, Sami and her twin brother Eric are born in October 1984. Sami is named after Marlena's own late twin sister, Samantha, and Sami's middle name, Gene, comes from Marlena's friend, Eugene Bradford.

In 1992, the twins are sent to live in Colorado after their mother disappears. When Sami returns to Salem rapidly aged to a teenager in early 1993, she quickly attaches herself to Austin Reed, her older sister Carrie's boyfriend. Sami is devastated when she witnesses her mother making love to John Black on top of the conference table at Titan Publishing, and becomes alienated from Marlena and John. She vows to protect her father at all costs from finding out the truth.

When Marlena finds herself pregnant, Sami actively pursues Austin to forget her own pain. Lucas Roberts comes to town and is instantly attracted to Carrie. Lucas and Sami start dating each other to make Carrie and Austin jealous and break them up, but the plan fails. A candy striper at Salem Hospital, Sami discovers how to read a blood test. Concluding that Marlena's baby is John's and not Roman's, she switches the blood test results to keep her father from getting hurt.

Sami meets a bulemic model named Brandee, and convinces herself that by binging and purging herself she can improve her figure and thus make Austin love her. She hires Brandee to flirt with Austin, which culminates in a kiss witnessed by Carrie. Austin and Carrie break up; Sami is happy, she begins to feel guilty about hurting her sister. Sami stops trying to get Austin for herself, but is still bulimic, obsessed with being thin at any cost.

By this time, Marlena had given birth to a daughter, Isabella, nicknamed "Belle.". When Sami overhears that there are to be new blood tests on the child, she panics and kidnaps the baby. Planning to unload Belle via an illegal adoption, she books a flight to Florida to flee John, who is on her trail. He catches her before she can board the plane. An upset Roman orders Sami into counseling, but Belle never receives another blood test, so her true paternity is not revealed.

Marlena discovers Sami's bulimia and confronts her; in turn, Sami tells Marlena that not only had she seen Marlena and John make love at Titan that night, she also knows that Belle is not Roman's child. Marlena tries to comfort her daughter, but Sami wants no part in it. She agrees not to tell Roman about Belle, not because she wants to aid Marlena, but because she does not want to hurt Roman. On the day of Belle's christening, Stefano DiMera overhears Sami talking about the affair, breaks into her locker at the hospital and steals her diary. He copies the pages in which Sami had written about the affair, and shows them to Roman. When confronted, Sami admits that it is all true; Roman leaves Marlena.

Eventually Alan Harris, an older friend of Carrie's, shows interest in Sami. He is a bad influence on her, getting the 15-year-old drunk at college parties. One night, she offers to cook him dinner, and he asks her to pose for some "sexy pictures." When he asks her to take off her clothes, she refuses; he gets angry with her and rapes her. Ashamed, Sami tells no one, but gets a pregnancy and AIDS test in secret. Both come back negative.

Sami tries to keep the fact that she had been raped to herself, but Lucas notices that she is upset about something and, concerned, pushes her to tell him what is going on. Eventually, she confesses to Lucas what Alan had done her. She begs him not to tell anyone, but in the interest of her wellbeing, he tells Carrie, who convinces Sami to press charges.

Since Sami had waited a long time to report the rape, there is no more physical evidence; in two trials, the case is dismissed. Sami becomes a pariah at school, and a tabloid magazine prints a story calling Sami a liar. Humiliated, she distances herself from Marlena and slaps Carrie across the face. She blames Carrie for her situation, as Carrie had pushed her to press charges and then had herself been forced to testify in Alan's defense, having to discuss Sami's kidnapping of Belle and dating Alan behind her parents' backs. Sami becomes intent on making her sister pay for her shame.

Playing the innocent victim, Sami again tries to lure Austin away from Carrie yet again. Sami sets up what looks like another attack from Alan; Austin rescues and immediately takes pity on her. Lucas, who had since tried to join forces with Sami, is disgusted and disowns her. Carrie suspects that Sami is crying wolf and refuses to give Lucas a telephone message from Sami, who is down at the docks. A vengeful Alan appears at the pier that night with a gun, intent on raping her once again. Sami and Alan struggle with the gun and she manages to seize control of it; Alan taunts her, gloating that she does not have the guts to shoot him. Sami pulls the trigger and shoots him in the groin. The tabloids get wind of the story and publish an exposé with the headline "Sami Brady Bobbittizes Alan Harris!" Sami suffers more public ridicule. After being hassled and doused with beer by some men in a bar, Lucas takes her to the photo lab at Titan to get her new clothes and comfort her. After reassuring her that she is not worthless and that he cares a great deal for her, the two make love.

Before he leaves town, Alan tells Carrie that Sami had indeed been pretending the whole time. Furious, Carrie slaps Sami acoss the face; Austin walks in, becomes angry with Carrie, and breaks up with her. Sensing opportunity, Sami befriends a nurse who had mentioned a drug that could make a man totally out of it but still allow him to perform sexually. While Austin is out partying with friends, Sami drugs a beer at his apartment. She gets him to drink it and has him make love to her; with Sami was wearing Carrie's perfume, a drugged Austin had beleived that he was having sex with Carrie. In the morning, Austin is horrified. Sami tells him that he had confessed his love to her, but he insists that it is not true. Austin swears Sami to secrecy, begging her to not tell Carrie about that night.

Marlena, possessed by the devil, tells Sami to sleep with Austin again. When Sami tries to seduce Austin, he makes it clear that he only likes Sami as a friend. Ashamed, Sami boards a train for Los Angeles and is missing for many months. She reappears the day of Carrie and Austin's wedding, and waits for the moment she can object to the marriage during the ceremony. Howevere, Mickey Horton finds her and announcs to everyone that she is alive. Sami pretends to faint, and informs Carrie that not only had Austin had slept with her, but she is now carrying his child. Carrie is furious with Austin, and calls off the wedding.

Sami becomes a mother

Sami gives birth to Will on November 1 1995. It is ultimately revealed that he is actually Lucas' son, conceived during Lucas and Sami's one night of lovemaking in the photo lab. Sami and Austin part ways, and she becomes engaged to Franco Kelly. On the night of their wedding, Sami finds out that Franco had cheated on her with a stripper and declares "I'm going to kill him." Later, Sami finds Franco's body, shot dead. She faints, and subsequently is unable to remember discovering Franco's body. Lucas had actually killed him in his mother Kate's defense, but Kate plants the gun on Sami. She is convicted and sentenced to death. While strapped to the table, moments away from receiving a lethal injection, it is revealed that Sami had not killed Franco. She is eventually cleared and released. Kate had arranged for a terminally ill criminal to take the blame, and although Sami eventually learns the truth, Salem at large does not know that Lucas had been responsible for Franco's death. Kate had convinced Lucas to take Will away from Sami. Sami becomes engaged to Brandon Walker, and with his help regains full custody of Will.

Sami is engaged to Lucas Roberts in 2004 and they plan to marry. Not wanting Sami and Lucas to be together, Kate drugs Sami (and with the help of Eugenia) puts her in bed with Brandon. Lucas walks in and assumes the worst. The engagement is called off, and Sami dresss like a man named "Stan" to prove her innocence unnoticed.[3] In the process, Sami/Stan manages to do several misdeeds and unknowingly works for Brady family enemy, Tony DiMera. Eventually, she is able to prove that Kate had been lying, and Lucas proposes to her again. At their wedding, Kate exposes Sami's actions as Stan, and Sami is once again alone. Austin gives her a shoulder to cry on, and Sami believes that she is falling in love with Austin again. However, she also knows that Carrie is his true love, and she herself still pined for Lucas. Eventually, Carrie reappears as an executive in charge of her own company, HighStyle. Austin intended to buy the company out, unaware that Carrie is running it. Sami, working for Austin at the time, manipulates circumstances to ensure that Austin does not find out Carrie in charge of the company until after the buyout. Lucas, Austin's business rival, has a romantic interets in Carrie and also intends to buy out the company, but backs off after learning Carrie is in charge. He deliberately does not warn Austin about Carrie, knowing that when Austin takes over the company, Carrie will hate him. Carrie is later admitted to the hospital, and Sami blackmails Dr. Lexie Carver. Sami threatens to tell Lexie's husband Abe about Lexie's affair with Tek Kramer if the doctor does not come up with a way to keep Carrie and Austin apart for good. Lexie soon tells Carrie that any child that she and Austin conceived would have congenital defects, driving Carrie to pick Lucas over Austin.

2006

Sami was eventually with Austin and shortly after he popped the question to her, she and Austin received a new neighbor, an English race car driver named EJ Wells, who was immediately smitten with Sami. They soon developed a close friendship and a guilty Sami confided in EJ regarding her secret, after receiving several notes and calls from a mysterious gloved hand. She received one the day she was to marry Austin, but called it off to avoid humiliation. EJ comforted her and they kissed for the first time. The next day, Will didn't show up for school and due to a phone call presumably from 'the gloved hand', Sami feared that he was kidnapped, so she told Lucas, Austin and Carrie about the notes she received (but not the reasoning behind it). Sami and Lucas went on TV, courtesy of Mythic Communications, to plea to the child abductor to return Will to safety. However, Will came home and revealed that he actually ran away from home to avoid embarrassment at school after Sami's latest wedding disaster. Realizing that Will needed a stable environment, Lucas and Will moved in with Sami (while Will was gone, Lucas discovered that Carrie was cheating on him with Austin and the two were separated).

Soon enough, the infamous gloved hand slid another note under Sami's door and despite her efforts to keep it to herself, Lucas picked it up and discovered the truth about Sami's blackmail. She and Carrie got into a fight and Carrie swore to tell everyone about this sick deed. Lucas and Will moved out again and her entire family abandoned her. She found comfort once again with EJ.

Unknown to Sami, EJ came to Salem to bring grief to the "good people of Salem" (especially the Bradys). In his conversations with Kate, it was revealed that he was simply trying to seduce Sami on Kate's behalf, to keep her away from Kate's sons, Lucas and Austin. However, EJ told Kate that he wanted Sami to conceive his child because he is very concerned with lineage and believes that Sami is the perfect woman to continue his family line. It is eventually revealed to viewers that EJ is in fact Elvis Aron Banks and is presumably behind the gloved hand crimes.

Sami and EJ have a couple of dates but at the same time Lucas is making moves toward a reconciliation. After Sami found out that EJ was sleeping with Kate, she broke off any involvement with him. But Sami was forced to act like she was interested in EJ again on her uncle Bo's request because the police were conducting a search on EJ's apartment. EJ reasonably believed that she wanted to continue their relationship but Sami wanted to try things out with Lucas again.

By this point, it had long ago become clear to all but Sami and Lucas themselves, and a few parties such as Kate, who couldn't stand Sami, and EJ, who wanted Sami for himself that Sami and Lucas were perfect for each other. Of course, things seldom run smoothly for a couple or a potential couple in a soap opera, and Sami's romances tend to run over even more bumps in the road than the usual soap opera romances. Nevertheless, the fact that the two share a child together was a major factor always tying them together. Sami and Lucas rekindled their love in spite of Kate and began working to rebuild it.

Sami and Lucas decided to go away on a romantic trip. After their car broke down they went to an abandoned cabin. The two made love for the first time in over a year. Soon after they were talking about their future when the roof caved in and trapped Lucas in the rubble. Sami tried desperately to help him, but she couldn't lift the beam. She decided to go find help. Unfortunately Sami found help, EJ Wells was on the run after having shot Sami's stepfather John Black. EJ held a gun to Sami and told her she had to get him past the police. EJ was upset with Sami for luring him into the trap set by John Black and the police. After Sami got EJ past the police, she begged him to help her with Lucas. EJ told Sami that the only way he would help her was if she slept with him.

EJ informed Sami that his father Stefano had instructed him to plant the Dimera seed in a Brady woman. Sami was disgusted by EJ's request, immediately calling it rape, and cursed him. In the end Sami realized that she had no choice but to agree to EJ's physical coercion. Because Lucas's life was at risk, Sami had no choice but to allow EJ force himself on her. EJ frequently refers to it as their night of love. But Sami refers to it as rape.

After the incident, EJ taunted Sami and told her she was incredible and that he would remember her always. He said that he might have to tell Lucas about their little tryst. Sami viciously slapped EJ and told him to never speak of this again, saying she would find a way to live with what he did to her. After threats were exchanged, EJ finally accompanied Sami to the cabin and saved Lucas' life. He then forced a kiss on Sami, threatened her again, and then left.

2007

On January 23, 2007, Sami told Lucas that she was pregnant, leaving out the fact that he might not be the father.

Sami and Lucas finally took their marriage vows on May 9, 2007. Part of Sami's secret came out when EJ arranged for a picture of himself and Sami speeding in Lexie's car the night John was shot and when EJ forced Sami to let him have sex with her to be displayed in the middle of Lucas and Sami's wedding reception. Lucas stood by Sami, and after returning to their apartment Sami admitted the truth to Lucas about the rape and that the baby may not be his. Lucas blamed himself for Sami not trusting him enough to tell him what had happened to her and tearfully apologized. He tells Sami he will stand by her and the baby regardless of paternity and the two make love, consummating their marriage. Later, EJ tells Lucas of Sami drugging Lucas and then attempting to kill him (EJ) in the cabin fire and, though Lucas is upset about the drugging, once again stands by Sami.

While on honeymoon, in New Orleans, Sami realized that the house she and Lucas had been repairing, is Maison Blanche, which belongs to the DiMeras.

Celeste performed a voodoo ritual and declares that E.J is the father of Sami's baby. Tony DiMera and EJ are now attempting to steal the unborn child's stem cells, in order to save Stefano DiMera, but it appears that EJ may have a change of heart.

It was recently revealed that Sami looks exactly like her great-aunt Colleen Brady, who had a love affair with Stefano DiMera's father Santo DiMera. Santo looked exactly like his grandson, EJ Wells. Stefano agreed to end the Dimera feud with the Brady family if Sami and EJ wed (claiming the fact that Sami is already married is "of no consequence" to him) but Sami adamantly refused.

On June 25, 2007, during an amnio test to establish paternity of her child, Sami discovered she was having twins. Nick Fallon is supposed to run the DNA test on the amniotic fluid from the test but Kate blackmails him into telling Sami the twin's are EJ's. At the time, Nick doesn't run a test; he gives Marlena a fake report to give to Sami while Kate goes to EJ to tell him he is the father.

Because of the lie, Sami is kidnapped by Stefano DiMera to get Sami's babies' stem cells. As Stefano and his doctor are about to carry out the procedure on Stefano's private jet, Stefano's henchman Bart comes in to tell them to stop. According to a medical chart he declares that EJ is not the father and the stem cells are therefore not a match for Stefano. Upon review of the chart, Stefano's doctor, Dr. Rolf, confirms that "there is another father." Stefano leaves Sami in a motel somewhere in Salem after the revelation.

On July 31 2007, Nick reveals he had a second test done and that EJ isn't the father of Sami's babies; Lucas is. Nick tells Lucas and Sami that he rushed the first test and that's why it was in error. He apologizes, never admitting Kate blackmailed him or that he didn't run the original test. Lucas and Sami are excited and Sami kicks EJ out of their apartment.

EJ did not walk out of Sami's life however and continued meeting her claiming that he wanted to end the Brady/DiMera feud so tha their families could be safe. When Stefano arranges for Kate to meet Andre and collect a folio that would end the feud, Sami and Lucas went in her place and tried to steal the folio from Andre. However, their ploy failed and Andre beat up Lucas and locked Sami and EJ in a steam room before turning up the heat.

EJ attempted to hot wire the fan in the steam room to keep them cool while waiting for help but was electrecuted instead. Sami tried to revive him by giving him rescue breaths. EJ suddenly kissed her which she returned before pulling away. She wondered out loud that she must be oxygen-deprived. Lucas frees them and they were sent to the hospital. EJ visits Sami and suggested they read Santo-Colleen's love letters which informed them about Santo's and Colleen's tryst.

In mid-October 2007, even though she insists she loves Lucas, Sami asked Lucas for a divorce so that she could marry EJ and end the feud between the Bradys and the Dimera. Helping convince Sami that marrying EJ was the right thing to do was Andre DiMera's multiple attempts to kill Sami and EJ. The final decision was made when Sami's step father, John Black was killed in a hit and run accident. While John was dying, Sami forced Lucas to sign annulment papers, the first step in the divorce process for a Catholic.

With Lucas by her side, on October 23, 2007, Sami finally gave birth to the twins, a boy and a girl, delivered by their grandma Marlena. While there was a complication with the girl during the delivery, the cord wrapped around her neck, Marlena was able to successfully deliver her with no further complications. While the family celebrated, EJ and Kate arrived interrupting the happy day. While they had originally planned to name the boy Roman Thomas Roberts, they changed their plan and decided to name the boy after the presumed dead John Black as a tribute, he was given the name of John Roman Roberts. The girl was given the name of Alice Caroline Horton, a tribute to Alice Horton and Caroline Brady. Lucas plans to call her Ali.

After a trip to Santo Domingo for a "quicky" divorce, on November 9, 2007, Sami and EJ were married in a ceremony attended only by the bride, the groom, and the groom's father Stefano, along with multiple unknown guest with guns. Immediately after being pronounced husband and wife, three shots rang out one of which struck EJ in his lower back, lodging in his spine. EJ was rushed to the hospital where emergency surgery was performed. The doctors were unable to remove the bullet leaving EJ paralyzed from the waist down. Sami has been by his side to help him have the will to live while still living with Lucas and the twins. On December 3, EJ was released from the hospital and took custody of Johnny. Sami faces new decisions with EJ home from the hospital.
