Revision as of 04:04, 13 May 2012

Here the community can nominate articles to be selected as "Today's featured article" (TFA) on the main page. The TFA section aims to highlight the range of articles that have "featured article" status, from Art and architecture through to Warfare, and wherever possible it tries to avoid similar topics appearing too close together without good reason. Requests are not the only factor in scheduling the TFA (see Choosing Today's Featured Article); the final decision rests with the TFA coordinators: Wehwalt, Dank and Gog the Mild, who also select TFAs for dates where no suggestions are put forward. Please confine requests to this page, and remember that community endorsement on this page does not necessarily mean the article will appear on the requested date.

  • The article must be a featured article. Editors who are not significant contributors to the article should consult regular editors of the article before nominating it for TFAR.
  • The article must not have appeared as TFA before (see the list of possibilities here), except that:
    • The TFA coordinators may choose to fill up to two slots each week with FAs that have previously been on the main page, so long as the prior appearance was at least five years ago. The coordinators will invite discussion on general selection criteria for re-runnable TFAs, and aim to make individual selections within those criteria.
    • The request must be either for a specific date within the next 30 days that has not yet been scheduled, or a non-specific date. The template {{@TFA}} can be used in a message to "ping" the coordinators through the notification system.

If you have an exceptional request that deviates from these instructions (for example, an article making a second appearance as TFA, or a "double-header"), please discuss the matter with the TFA coordinators beforehand.

It can be helpful to add the article to the pending requests template, if the desired date for the article is beyond the 30-day period. This does not guarantee selection, but does help others see what nominations may be forthcoming. Requesters should still nominate the article here during the 30-day time-frame.

How to post a new nomination:

I.
Create the nomination subpage.

In the box below, enter the full name of the article you are nominating (without using any brackets around the article's name) and click the button to create your nomination page.

II.
Write the nomination.

On that nomination page, fill out as many of the relevant parts of the pre-loaded {{TFAR nom}} template as you can, then save the page.

Your nomination should mention:

  • when the last similar article was, since this helps towards diversity on the main page (browsing Wikipedia:Today's featured article/recent TFAs will help you find out);
  • when the article was promoted to FA status (since older articles may need extra checks);
  • and (for date-specific nominations) the article's relevance for the requested date.
III.
Write the blurb.
Some Featured Articles promoted between 2016 and 2020 have pre-prepared blurbs, found on the talk page of the FAC nomination (that's the page linked from "it has been identified" at the top of the article's talk page). If there is one, copy and paste that to the nomination, save it, and then edit as needed. For other FAs, you're welcome to create your own TFA text as a summary of the lead section, or you can ask for assistance at WT:TFAR. We use one paragraph only, with no reference tags or alternative names; the only thing bolded is the first link to the article title. The length when previewed is between 925 and 1025 characters including spaces, " (Full article...)" and the featured topic link if applicable. More characters may be used when no free-use image can be found. Fair use images are not allowed.
IV.
Post at TFAR.

After you have created the nomination page, add it here under a level-3 heading for the preferred date (or under a free non-specific date header). To do this, add (replacing "ARTICLE TITLE" with the name of your nominated article):
===February 29===
{{Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/ARTICLE TITLE}}

Nominations are ordered by requested date below the summary chart. More than one article can be nominated for the same date.

It would also then be helpful to add the nomination to the summary chart, following the examples there. Please include the name of the article that you are nominating in your edit summary.

If you are not one of the article's primary editors, please then notify the primary editors of the TFA nomination; if primary editors are no longer active, please add a message to the article talk page.

Scheduling:

In the absence of exceptional circumstances, TFAs are scheduled in date order, not according to how long nominations have been open or how many supportive comments they have. So, for example, January 31 will not be scheduled until January 30 has been scheduled (by TFAR nomination or otherwise).

Summary chart

Currently accepting requests from October 1 to October 31.

The TFAR requests page is currently accepting nominations from October 1 to October 31. Articles for dates beyond then can be listed here, but please note that doing so does not count as a nomination and does not guarantee selection.
Before listing here, please check for dead links using checklinks or otherwise, and make sure all statements have good references. This is particularly important for older FAs and reruns.

Khalid al-mihdhar
Khalid al-Mihdhar (1975–2001) was one of five hijackers of American Airlines Flight 77, which was flown into the Pentagon as part of the September 11 attacks. Born in Saudi-Arabien, he fought in the Bosnian War during the 1990s. In early 1999, he traveled to Afghanistan where, as an experienced and respected jihadist, he was selected by Osama bin Laden to participate in the attacks. Mihdhar arrived in California with fellow hijacker Nawaf al-Hazmi in January 2000. Upon arriving in San Diego, California, Mihdhar trained as a pilot. On the morning of September 11, 2001, Mihdhar boarded American Airlines Flight 77, which was hijacked approximately 30 minutes after take off. The plane was deliberately crashed into the Pentagon, killing all 64 people aboard the flight, along with 125 on the ground. (more...)

Total: 3 points. Two for age (promoted in 2008), and one for being the most widely accepted birthdate for al-Mihdhar, used on his entry visa into the U.S. and referenced in government documents. It seems in somewhat bad taste to save articles on the hijackers to appear on the anniversary of the attacks, so the birthdays make the next most-logical date to feature them. Comment Personally I have no issue having this run on Sept. 11th. A 9-11 Attacks related article would be best to run on that day, and a biography of one of the hijackers would be very informative and interesting to read on that day. However, I can see how some would see a FA on the Main Page on that day as somehow celebrating Khalid al-Mihdhar. However, you might have that problem anyways regardless of what day it runs. So my suggestion is to save it for Sept. 11 of this year. --Harizotoh9 (talk) 16:48, 9 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Kommentar Although I have no objections to feature the article for May 16, I agree with Harizotoh. Featuring the article for September 11, 2012 would be intriguing. SwisterTwister talk 07:15, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose – Well normally I like to think I'm pretty open minded, but in this case I'll make an exception purely on the grounds of distaste for the subject matter. I'm sure it's a fine article, but... bleh. Regards, RJH (talk) 14:20, 11 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment 9/11 attacks are very important in recent American and world history. A biography of one of the hijackers would be interesting for people to read. Featuring on the main page does not mean Wikipedia is endorsing the content or the person. Unsavory people have been featured before. --Harizotoh9 (talk) 00:49, 12 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Mmm... yes I'm aware of the significance of the 9/11 attack, having lived through it. Note that my opinion is no reflection whatsoever upon the article's authors. I also understand that posting this article does not represent the views of the management. That being said, I won't support the article. Thank you. Regards, RJH (talk) 23:27, 12 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment This is literally the first time I have ever been to this page, and I found the idea of this article intriguing - so I read it. Admittedly, I am, in no way, completely representative of the broader community, but from an outside perspective, I found that the subject piqued my interest and, by going in to the article, added context to my understanding of the 9/11 attacks. I don't know entirely what the litmus for featured articles is, but this one was provocative and interesting enough to grab my attention - surely at least part of the impetus for featuring an article. The Well of Loneliness is a 1928 lesbian novel by the British author Radclyffe Hall. It follows the life of Stephen Gordon, an Englishwoman from an upper-class family whose "sexual inversion" (homosexuality) is apparent from an early age. She finds love with Mary Llewellyn, whom she meets while serving as an ambulance driver in World War I, but their happiness together is marred by social isolation and rejection, which Hall depicts as having a debilitating effect on inverts. The novel portrays inversion as a natural, God-given state and makes an explicit plea: "Give us also the right to our existence". The novel became the target of a campaign by James Douglas, editor of the Sunday Express newspaper, who wrote "I would rather give a healthy boy or a healthy girl a phial of prussic acid than this novel." Although its only sexual reference consists of the words "and that night, they were not divided", a British court judged it obscene because it defended "unnatural practices between women". In the United States the book survived legal challenges in New York state and in Customs Court. (more...)

Steve Dodd (born 1928), is an Indigenous Australian actor, notable for playing indigenous characters across seven decades of Australian film. After beginning his working life as a stockman and rodeo rider, Dodd was given his first film roles by prominent Australian actor Chips Rafferty. His career was interrupted by six years in the Australian Army during the Korean War, and limited by discrimination and typecasting. Despite this, by 1985 he had appeared in 55 movies or television features. Dodd has performed in some of Australia's most prominent movies, including Gallipoli and The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith, in which he played Tabidgi, the murdering uncle of the lead character. He has also held minor parts in Australia-based international film productions including The Coca-Cola Kid, Quigley Down Under and The Matrix. He has appeared in minor roles in early Australian television series, such as Homicide and Rush, as well as more recent series including The Flying Doctors. (more...)

Queen Elizabeth II
Elizabeth II (Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor)(born 21 April 1926) is the constitutional monarch of 16 sovereign states known as the Commonwealth realms, and head of the 54-member Commonwealth of Nations. In her specific role as the monarch of the United Kingdom, one of her 16 realms, she is Supreme Governor of the Church of England. She is also head of state of the Crown Dependencies. Her father acceded to the throne as George VI in 1936 on the abdication of his brother Edward VIII. She began to undertake public duties during the Second World War, in which she served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service. On the death of her father in 1952, she became Head of the Commonwealth and queen regnant of seven independent Commonwealth countries: the Vereinigtes Königreich, Kanada, Australien, Neuseeland, Südafrika, Pakistan, and Ceylon. Her coronation service in 1953 was the first to be televised. In 1947 she married Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, with whom she has four children: Charles, Anne, Andrew, and Edward. Her reign of 72 years is the second-longest for a British monarch; only Queen Victoria has reigned longer. Elizabeth's Silver and Golden Jubilees were celebrated in 1977 and 2002; her Diamond Jubilee is being celebrated during 2012.
