Willi Tokarev (Russian: Ви́лли То́карев, born Vilen Tokarev on 11 November 1934) is a Soviet, Russian and former expatriate Russian-American singer-songwriter.[1]
Biography
He was born Vilen Tokarev in the small cossack village of Chernyshov in Adyghe Autonomous Oblast, North Caucasus Krai, Russia, on 11 November 1934. His father was a Kuban cossack by birth.[2] Tokarev was named Vilen in honor of Vladimir Lenin,[3] as the Soviet name is an abbreviation of "Vladimir Ilyich Lenin".[4]
Since 1970 until 1974 he lived and performed as a singer in the town of Murmansk.[5]
In 1974, Tokarev emigrated from the USSR to the United States, where he lived in the New York City and gave concerts to the Russian community of Brighton Beach. Tokarev worked as a taxi driver and it took him four years to earn money to release his first album.[6] In the 80s his songs were widely known among the Russian emigrants in America. Back in the Soviet Union, his songs about America written from the perspective of a Russian émigré[7][8] also became became very popular.[9] They weren't broadcast and de facto were forbidden, but everyone knew them.[10][11]
In the late 80s, Tokarev began coming back to the USSR with concert tours.[9] He returned to Russia in 1996.[12]
Since 2005, Tokarev resides in Moscow. He lives in the famous Kotelnicheskaya Embankment Building[13] and was named a Honorary Resident of the Moscow's Tagansky Raion.[14]
At the age of almost 80, he still tours and records new songs.[15]
As of March 2013, his discography included 48 studio and 5 compilation albums. He also had an episodic role in the movie "Night Watch".[16]
Awards
Willy Tokarev is a multiple winner of the Radio Chanson's Chanson of the Year Award, the latest time being in 2014.[17]
