Rasmea Yousef Odeh, also known as Rasmea Yousef and Rasmieh Steve, is an associate director at the Arab American Action Network in Chicago, Illinois.[1][2][3][4] She is on trial in Detroit as of November 2014 for immigration fraud, charged with concealing her arrest, conviction, and imprisonment for a fatal terrorist bombing.[5][6][7][8]

Odeh was sentenced to life in prison in Israel, and imprisoned for 10 years, for involvement in two terrorist bombings in Jerusalem in 1969, one of which killed two people. In 1980, she was released in an exchange of prisoners with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

Conviction and imprisonment in Israel

In 1970 Odeh was sentenced by an Israeli military court to life in prison for her involvement in two terrorist bombings in Jerusalem, including one that killed two Hebrew University students, Leon Kanner and Eddie Joffe, on February 21, 1969, when it was placed at a Jerusalem SuperSol supermarket.[9][10][11][12][13] She was also convicted of bombing and damaging the British Consulate four days later.[14][15][16][17] In 1980, she was amongst 78 prisoners released by Israel in an exchange with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine for an Israeli soldier captured in Lebanon.[18][19][20]

Entry into the United States, and application for citizenship

Odeh entered the United States from Jordan in 1995.[21][22] At the time, she denied that she had ever been charged, convicted or imprisoned.[23]

In 2004, Odeh applied to become a United States citizen.[24] On her immigration forms, she answered "no" when asked if she had ever been convicted of a crime or spent time in prison.[25][26]

She subsequently became a naturalized US citizen in 2004.[27][28] She also became associate director of the Arab American Action Network in Chicago.[29]

Arrest and trial for immigration fraud

Odeh was arrested in October 2013 at her home in Evergreen Park, Illinois, in the Chicago area, for not mentioning her conviction in her application.[30][31][32]

Odeh is on trial as of November 2014 for immigration fraud before a federal jury in Detroit, before Judge Gershwin Drain.[33][34][35] She is accused of concealing her role in the deadly bombing in Israel, and arrest, conviction, and imprisonment, when she filed US immigration papers.[36][37][38][39]

The first judge assigned to the case, Judge Paul Borman, recused himself after it was revealed is family had held investments in the Jerusalem supermarket that Odeh and others were convicted of plotting to bomb in 1969, stating that his financial ties "could be perceived as establishing a reasonably objective inference of a lack of impartiality in the context of the issues presented in this case."[40] He had refused an earlier request by Odeh's lawyers to step down from the case on the basis of his long history of involvement with the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, that he had raised more that $3 million for a pro-Israeli charity, and had made numeorus trips to Israel, saying that Odeh's lawyers were engaged in "carelass and rank speculation" for suggesting that he could not be impartial in the case.[41]

If Odeh is convicted, the court could take away her U.S. citizenship and impose a 10-year prison term on her for immigration fraud.[42] Odeh rejected a pre-trial offer from federal prosecutors that would have limited her prison sentence to a maximum of six months and, after that, allowed her to remain free until her deportation, saying that she felt it was not in her best interest and preferred the case to go to trial.[43]
