New Cairo (Arabic: القاهرة الجديدة el-Qāhera el-Gedīda) is a city covering an area of about 30,000 hectares (70,000 acres) on the southeastern edge of Cairo governerate. It was established by presidential decree number 191 in the year 2000.[1][2][3] The master plan was created in 2001 by a Boston firm. As of 2015, the city is still under construction, and its population is rapidly growing.

Located in what was formerly desert, New Cairo ranges in elevation between 250 and 350 metres (820 and 1,150 ft) above sea level. [4] Its largest neighborhood is El-Tagamu El Khames. [citation needed]
