Legs4Africa is a UK-based international mobility charity headquartered in Leicester, East Midlands. It is a non-profit non-governmental organization founded by Tom Williams.

The main goal of the organization is to empower amputees in Sub-Saharan Africa with the basic resources to regain or improve their mobility. Towards that goal, Legs4Africa collects second-hand mobility equipment such as prostheses (legs and arms), wheelchairs, crutches, walkers, and orthotics devices such as knee and ankle braces.

Foundation and principles

Legs4Africa was founded by Tom Williams on 12 March 2014 as Legs 4 Africa with the principle to "minimise waste & maximise life." It is an amputee charity with the goal of collecting second-hand prosthetic limbs and other mobility equipment from the UK to be sent to amputees in need in Sub-Saharan Africa.[1][2]

Before June 2016, the reprocessing or remanufacturing of medical devices like prostheses which are labeled as single-use was prohibited by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in accordance with the laws governing European Union.[3][4][note 1] Siezing upon this as an opportunity, Legs4Africa promoted the use of second-hand prosthetic limbs as a charitable donation to nations with still developing healthcare systems where they would be put to use.[1][2]

Legs4Africa was registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales on 26 September 2014.[1] Damian Cadman-Jones LLB, Tom Williams and Tom Wolfe are trustees of the charity.[6] It's UK Registered Charity Number is 1158697.[2] Legs4Africa was originally based out of Bristol, South West England.

Early history

While on vacation in 2010, Tom Williams met a Gambian amputee name Paul Tierra.[7]

In 2014, Legs4Africa even sent a prosthetic hoof to Hector the donkey in Luxor, Egypt. Hector had the end of his limb amputated after its circulation was cut off while he was tethered. The prosthesis was improvised from parts donated to Legs4Africa.[8][9][10]
