A series of shootings occurred in multiple cities across the United States during 2024's Fourth of July celebrations. All together, the shootings left at least 33 dead and dozens more injured nationwide.[1]

Background

[edit]

The Fourth of July is historically one of the nation's deadliest days of the year. [2][vague] A flurry of shootings in 2023 left more than a dozen dead and over 60 wounded.[3][relevant?] Violence and mass shootings tend to increase during summer months, with more large gatherings taking place, school letting out, and hotter temperatures.[citation needed]

Chicago shootings

[edit]

In Chicago alone, 13 people were killed and 61 were wounded in shootings during the extended Fourth of July weekend.[4] A shooting on Thursday killed two women and an 8-year-old boy in Chicago's South Side neighborhood.[5] Eight people were wounded in Chicago's Little Italy neighborhood shortly after midnight on Friday.[6] 90 minutes later, a shooting in the city's Austin neighborhood left 6 wounded.[7]

Philadelphia shooting

[edit]

In Philadelphia, a mass shooting left 1 dead and 8 others injured.[8]

California shootings

[edit]

In Huntington Beach, two people were killed and three others were injured less than two hours after a fireworks show ended.[9] Authorities arrested a suspect.

Other incidents

[edit]

In Niles, Ohio, Police said a 15-year-old boy was in custody after a 23-year-old man was fatally shot on Thursday night at a Fourth of July party.[10] A 10-year-old girl, identified as Gracie Griffin was fatally shot in Cleveland.[11]

Aftermath

[edit]

Brandon Johnson, the mayor of Chicago, said that the recent violence "left our city in grief". A community rally was planned for Friday evening, and police presence will increase during the weekend. Recent violence at a beach at Lake Michigan caused it to be closed early through the holiday weekend as a precaution.[12]
