Iga Świątek is the defending champion.

Ashleigh Barty and Naomi Osaka were both in contention for the WTA No. 1 singles ranking at the start of the event. Barty retained the top ranking after Osaka withdrew from the second round.

Serena Williams was attempting to win a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title and a Quadruple Career Grand Slam, however she lost in the fourth round to Elena Rybakina. She became the oldest woman to reach the fourth round at Roland Garros in the Open Era; the record previously held by Venus Williams.

Angelique Kerber was attempting to complete a Career Grand Slam, but lost in the first round to Anhelina Kalinina.

This was the first time in 53 years and the first time in the Open Era, where six players made their Grand Slam quarterfinal debut.

With the defeats of Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka, and Markéta Vondroušová in the fourth round, a first-time Grand Slam finalist is guaranteed from the bottom half of the draw.

Tamara Zidanšek became the first Slovenian woman to reach the quarterfinals and the semifinals of a Grand Slam. Likewise, Maria Sakkari became the first female Greek player in the Open Era to reach the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam.

Coco Gauff became the youngest female player to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal since Nicole Vaidišová in 2006.
