Seed Health, popularly known as Seed, is an American health and life science company, known for its line of probiotics. Founded in 2015 by Ara Katz and Raja Dhir, Seed was launched with the aim to 'impact human and planetary health'. The company has two flagship products; their DS-01™ Daily Synbiotic, and PDS-08™ Pediatric Daily Synbiotic. Both are sold direct to consumer, forgoing traditional brick-and-mortar retail.

Seed develops products aided by partnerships with academic institutions including Caltech, Harvard University, MIT, the University of Zurich and Stanford University. The company is set to expand into developing skincare, oral care and infant health, alongside developing solutions to ecological challenges with SeedLabs.

History

Seed was founded in Los Angeles in 2015 and incorporated as Seed Health, Inc. to operate as a microbial sciences company, serving the US market.[1] Bloomberg notes their initial focus on discoveries across 'novel therapeutics, consumer health innovations, and environmental solutions'.[2]

It's founders and Co-CEOs are consumer tech entrepreneur Ara Katz and microbiome entrepreneur Raja Dhir.[3] Katz previously co-founded mobile commerce company, Spring, and is a fellow at the MIT Media Lab.[4][5][6] Dhir served on the board of scientific journal, Microbiome, alongside developing prior microbiome patents.[7][8]

In February 2021, the company announced it had acquired New York-based Auggi Technologies Inc., using artificial intelligence to track and analyze digestive health.[9] In July 2022, Seed partnered with Axial Therapeutics to "develop probiotics and therapeutics that [...] target anxiety, depression and mental wellbeing".[10]

As of 2022, Seed has 92 employees.[11] The company's research partners include Caltech, Harvard University, MIT, University of Zurich, Stanford University, Mass General Hospital, and Cleveland Clinic.[12][13] In 2022, Seed appointed Dirk Gevers, Former head of J&J's Janssen Human Microbiome Institute, as Chief Scientific Officer.[14][15]

Leadership structure

Seed is led by Dhir and Katz as co-CEOs, and advised by a board of Caltech Microbiology Professor Sarkis Mazmanian and Investor Ernesto Schmitt.[16][17] Dhir leads Seed's research, academic collaborations and scientific side.[18]

Seed's Scientific Advisory Board is led by Dhir and includes Dr. Jacques Ravel, Director of the Institute for Genome Sciences at the University of Maryland, Dr. Gregor Reid, Director of the Canadian R&D Centre for Human Microbiome and Probiotics, Dr. George M. Church and Robert Winthrop Professor of Genetics at Harvard Medical School and Professor of Health Sciences and Technology at Harvard and MIT.[19]

SeedLabs and others

In 2018, Seed established SeedLabs to develop solutions to ecological and environmental challenges using microbes. SeedLabs' developments include a probiotic for honeybees, featured in Time Magazine's 2018 best inventions, and as a Fast Company 'World Changing Idea'.[20][21] SeedLabs also focuses on applying probiotic solutions to coral regeneration, biomaterial development, and space.[22]

Funding and revenue

Seed had seed rounds in 2017 and 2019. Their Series A raised $40m, including $32.5m from The Craftory, with the remainder from and Artis Ventures and other contributing VCs.[23][24][25] Other backers include Cameron Diaz, Jessica Biel and Karlie Kloss.[26][27] In 2021, Seed estimated the probiotics market as worth $57.2 billion, and WWD quoted Seed as "on track" for a 8,948 percent three-year growth rate by the end of the second quarter 2021.[25][28] The Series A funding was used to grow the Seed team, and to 'go beyond the gut', developing skincare, oral care and infant health, and to fund an international expansion.[29] The company was said to be interested in an Asia-Pacific region expansion, where the market was projected to have a 46 percent rate of growth over the following five years.[25]

Products and distribution

Seed has two flagship products. Their DS-01™ Daily Synbiotic, formulated for gut, digestive and immune benefits, and their PDS-08™ Pediatric Daily Synbiotic.[30][31][32] The former comes in refillable capsule form, while the latter comes in powdered sachet form.[33][34]

Seed sells both products, which are vegan, on a 30-day, refillable, supply model.[35][36] Initial purchases come with a refillable glass jar or aluminium capsule, and subsequent purchases are sent in biodegradable, plastic-free packaging.[36] In 2021, Seed announced to Fast Company Magazine that they were carbon-negative, and released an 80-page field-guide to aide companies in becoming carbon negative.[37]

Product lines

  • DS-01™ Daily Synbiotic; a 24-strain broad spectrum probiotic with IND authorisation for a clinical trial on IBS patients under Dr. Anthony Lembo at Harvard Medical School.
  • PDS-08™ Pediatric Daily Synbiotic; a pre- and probiotic developed for under 18s, and launched in 2022.

Seed's DS-01™ underwent four clinical trials regarding 'constipation, post-alcohol gut microbiota restoration, urolithin production, and recovery after broad-spectrum antibiotics'.[38] The company's first live biotherapeutic entered FDA and EMA trials in 2021 for Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs).[39]
