Revision as of 02:33, 28 December 2022

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 22:48 on 14 September 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Errors with "In the news"

Errors in "Did you know ..."

This is a much stronger wording than our article's, which says "Kerry Youmans, a publicist for McQueen, recalled seeing audience members crying upon viewing it." I think it is inappropriate to simply state this as fact when it is the recollection of a single person - and not just any single person, but a publicist telling a sentimental story years later about his tragicially-deceased former client (and possibly friend). Also, even if we do take this claim at face value, I think "brought the audience to tears" has much stronger implications than "recalled seeing audience members crying." Basically, it seems like we're taking something that already has some big red flags of potentially just being someone's exaggerated tall tale, and then going on to exaggerate it a little more ourselves as the icing on the cake. I would suggest rewording it to:

This is admittedly a lot less "snappy," but I think the issues with the current version are significant enough to outweigh that. Also note that this hook was rather reluctantly approved, with both reviewers who commented expressing similar concerns. Pinging nominator @Premeditated Chaos: and reviewers @Onegreatjoke: and @Theleekycauldron:. -Elmer Clark (talk) 18:12, 27 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Why don't we bail on that entirely and go with:
Sourced by The Guardian ("leaping to their feet in a standing ovation") and Women's Wear Daily ("on their feet and roaring"). Most fashion shows are pretty stoic affairs and audiences are usually deeply cynical; Gods and Kings calls standing ovations a "rarity in fashion". Getting a fashion audience to their feet and screaming is something more of an achievement than doing the same thing at your average rock concert. We could try to work the rarity aspect into the hook I suppose, although I can't find a version that doesn't feel clunky. ♠PMC(talk) 19:07, 27 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I like that a lot better than my suggested rewording of the original. And I think it works as an interesting hook even if you don't know that context about the rarity. -Elmer Clark (talk) 20:19, 27 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The original hook wound up going live, so I've swapped it with a link to this discussion. ♠PMC(talk) 02:05, 28 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
In that hook, runway show is a redirect. Please replace it with [[Fashion show|runway show]]. MANdARAX • XAЯAbИAM 02:32, 28 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Errors in "On this day"

George Whitefield

Was born on 16 December in the Old Style calendar in use in Britain at the time. As per Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries: "the event should have occurred on the day in question in the calendar in use at the time (per MOS:JG)" - Dumelow (talk) 08:25, 25 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed this from the template. Happy to look at any suggestions for replacement - Dumelow (talk) 07:29, 27 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
On Eliminating Dogmatism and Formalism and Establishing Juche in Ideological Work

1955Supreme Leader of North Korea Kim Il-sung delivered the Juche speech, outlining the state ideology of his regime. The sourced statement in the article: "The exact time and setting of the speech are not known, but there are two distinct possibilities. The first theory is that the speech – subtitled "Speech to Party Propagandists and Agitators, December 28, 1955" – was delivered on that date to a small audience of propaganda workers. The second possibility is that the event was a meeting of the Central Committee of the WPK that same week" indicates the date is far from certain - Dumelow (talk) 09:58, 26 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

A Good Article from March 2021, date added in review. Found this ref "On Eliminating Dogmatism and Formalism and Establishing Juche in Ideological Work. Speech to Party Propaganda and Agitation Workers, December 28, 1955". Thanks, Zeete (talk) 15:26, 27 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
MS Norman Atlantic

2014 – The passenger ferry Norman Atlantic (pictured) caught fire in the Adriatic Sea, resulting in nine deaths, with a further 19 missing. Article lead states: "the bodies of 11 were recovered. It is known that 16 passengers died and it was estimated that there were 28 deaths overall". The main body states: "At least twelve people were killed as a direct result of the fire" - Dumelow (talk) 10:07, 26 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Article updated since last OTD entry, when the summary and article agreed on the numbers. Could drop how many missing phrase. Not sure how to summarize: "resulting in at least 16 deaths", "resulting in over 16 deaths"? Entry on December 28 also needs to change. Thanks, Zeete (talk) 15:41, 27 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sharon Dyall

Birthdate is sourced to the homepage of a website that doesn't mention Dyall - Dumelow (talk) 10:09, 26 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

HMS Warrior (1860)

1860 – To counter the French Navy's Gloire, the world's first ironclad warship, the Royal Navy launched the world's first iron-hulled armoured warship, HMS Warrior.

"first armour-plated, iron-hulled warships" is stated (uncited) in the lead but I couldn't locate it in the main text - Dumelow (talk) 07:48, 27 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Repeat from last year, replaced with new entry. Thanks, Zeete (talk) 15:51, 27 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Empress Genmei

Date of death stated only in the lead and infobox and is uncited. The (cited offline) main text only states "Genmei lived in retirement for seven years until her death at the age of 61 in December 721" - Dumelow (talk) 08:01, 27 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

As it's from 721 I suspect we don't know the exact date, in whatever dating system they used then. I cannot trivially find anything, anyway. Secretlondon (talk) 08:50, 27 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

William Ewart Gladstone

List of international goals scored by Andriy Shevchenko

"the second most-capped Ukrainian international behind Anatoliy Tymoshchuk (144)" Sure this has been here before. There is no source for the fact that he is the second most-capped player. The citations are to a list of Shevchenko's and Tymoshchuk's caps only - Dumelow (talk) 08:06, 27 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

"captained the side to a second-place finish behind Poland" is cited to a match summary for the subsequent playoff. This does not verify the information stated - Dumelow (talk) 08:09, 27 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It sure has been here before: Wikipedia talk:Today's featured list/January 2, 2023. The hope was that the move gave time for these issues to be addressed. If things remain unresolved, I suggest we simply don’t feature this. Schwede66 14:20, 27 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
