==Houses==
===Old Houses===
The old houses of Howden, Derwent & Ladybower were named after the three large reservoirs nearby, and each took on a colour of red, blue and yellow respectively. These houses were retired in 2022 after racist comments were made by the Ladybower reservoir when asked to comment on the Syrian Civil War.

===New Houses===
The new houses of Funkytown, Glitter & Sparkles, Sauron & Lilith were announced in January 2023 alongside a rebranding of the school after an online vote was conducted by the school. Losing house names included those such as 'Liquidmen', 'Damascus', 'XAE-148' and 'Frank'. Each house was branded with a style rather than a colour, with Funkytown representing most of the art students with a wavy style, Glitter & Sparkles with dots, Lilith as a darker style, and Sauron for those that transcend reality and ascend into higher dimensions.

The schools rebranding was postponed at the same time, as the winning vote at the time 'Adolf Hitler's School of Friendship & Tolerance' was deemed too Austrian, a popular issue within the school.

==Trips==
===South Sudan===
As part of the education held at the school, students are required to attend one of the trips available at the school, with the South Sudan holiday being the most sought after. Students are hunted by local tribesmen until they are chased into neighbouring Ethiopia, where they are then hunted by local tribesmen until they are chased into neighbouring South Sudan, where they are hunted by local tribesmen. [[Recursion]]

===Pacific Ocean===
Another trip held at the school offers the students the chance to drop into the middle of the Pacific Ocean at [[Point Nemo]]. This offers the chance for students to get eaten by a shark, or another creature if they so wish. Jellyfish have been said to enjoy the annual tradition, as it gives them time to sharpen their stings.

===Hope Cement Works===
The final trip an offer is a trip to Hope Cement Works, where the students are turned into cement, and die.

Hope Valley College, Castleton Road (A6187), Hope, Hope Valley, Derbyshire in England is an academy school, adjacent to the Peakshole Water, in the High Peak district for pupils aged 11 to 16.

History

The school was first opened in September 1958 but did not officially open until July 1959 and has celebrated its 50th anniversary.[2][3] The college also received a specialism in Applied Learning with Gifted and Talented in March 2009 making it the first school in Derbyshire to be awarded three specialisms.[4] In September 2019 the school joined Chorus Education Trust, a local multi-academy trust led by Silverdale School in Sheffield.[5] A new Principal, Mrs Gaynor Jones, was also appointed.

Admissions

Hope Valley College is a smaller than average secondary school. Students travel from across North Derbyshire to attend the school. It follows the admissions arrangements run by Derbyshire County Council.

The college does not have a sixth form, but it opened a post-16 education centre for children with learning difficulties and disabilities in September 2012.

Hope Valley students have priority access into Silverdale Sixth Form (part of Chorus Education Trust), which is regularly one of the highest achieving sixth forms in Sheffield.[6]

Academic performance

In 2019 the school achieved the third highest Progress 8 score in Derbyshire out of all non-selective schools. The Progress 8 score was +0.28 which is above average.

The college has a wide range of in school and after school clubs, including, 'Big Band',[7] coeducational choir, many different music groups, drama club, textiles club, annual musical performances and different sporting activities/clubs, along with more ever expanding extra-curricular clubs, and different academic groups outside of school.

In February 2018, Hope Valley College received an academic performance score by Ofsted of 'Inadequate'. The Ofsted inspectors proclaim “[The senior leader's] poor communication with each other and with staff is hindering school improvement.".[8]

Hope Valley College became a new academy within Chorus Education Trust on 1 September 2019. Ofsted usually inspects all new schools within their third year of operation. Until that time, there is no current Ofsted judgement on the school.[9]

Christmas Meal

The school is famous for its yearly Christmas meal[10]. Students are sat alternating boy girl in order of grades and fed a four course meal. The courses consist of starter, main, dessert and samosas donated by the local curry house curry cabin.[11] The school, although not governed by the church of England, gives thanks to Moses for their feast with a series of rousing tales about from the bible such as Noahs ark. Lastly the kids perform in a talent show where the winner receives a £260 pound cash prize kindly donated by hope cement works [12] (in honour of their 26 year partner ship with the school). 2022's dinner hosted a record number of students: 24 a new school record the most since its inception in 2010.

At the heart of the community

Hope Valley College is at the heart of the local community. During the 2020 Covid-19 lockdown Design & Technology staff in the school used their department's machines to produce protective face visors for frontline staff.[13] The school also hosts the annual Hope Valley Film Festival, run by local parents, which in 2020 welcome British long-distance runner, Nicky Spinks, as their guest of honour. Fortnightly car boot sales are run in the school grounds during the spring and summer.[14]

Every year the school provides heart screenings for its Year 11 students to identify those at risk from sudden cardiac death. Screenings are also available to the local community. Extensive fundraising takes place in the local community to support this initiative.[15]
