Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:39, 29 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Kural

"The text states that one should call anyone with virtue and kindness a Brahmin.{{sfn|Kaushik Roy|2012|p=153}}"

I got to know that you added this information on the wikipedia page : Kural. However, the source quoted is "unreliable". None of the prominent translators of Kural translate this kural as given in your source. The couplet does not define who can be referred as a Brahmin.

So, I'm taking down your edit. It will be better if you can quote better source. Vigneshvvickyv0 (talk) 09:11, 30 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The Kural itself is a primary source and quoting from it all by oneself involves WP:OR. The Kaushik Roy source is a WP:RS added after discussion between different users and reviewing editors and thus cannot be simply dismissed at whim. Please provide source for your claims but do not remove sourced contents. Please discuss on the talk page. Rasnaboy (talk) 17:58, 30 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

First of all, the Kural is not quoted rather its translation, which is still in discussion.

Kaushik Roy did not substantiate his translation. He did not give "source for his translation". And, I also quoted the translations of two prominent scholars.

The Kural does not define who can be referred as a Brahmin rather it only promotes non-violence over performing Yajnas.

So, I request you to quote a proper source or take down that part. Vigneshvvickyv0 (talk) 18:55, 30 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the message. But source is the details about the book or journal from which you gleaned the above info. It includes the title of the book/journal, title of the article (if a journal), name of the author, date, publisher detail, edition number (for books), volume and issue numbers (for journals), page numbers, URL details, etc. And, most importantly, this should be a reliable source (please see WP:RS), not a blog, self-published work, non-peer-reviewed works, opinion pieces, outdated published works (whose ideas have been scholarly refuted), and so forth. For example, the following sources in the article are reliable ones:
  • Kālidāsa (2001). The Recognition of Sakuntala: A Play In Seven Acts. Oxford University Press. pp. ix. ISBN 9780191606090. Archived from the original on 22 October 2020. Retrieved 14 January 2016.

Please provide similar ones. Rasnaboy (talk) 03:14, 8 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Plutarch's kids

I've only edited lower-tier articles and am not sure how to proceed with a larger edit to the section on Plutarch's family that covers the following:

1. The daughter, Timoxena, whose death precipitated the _Consolation_ 2. "little Charon", the son whose early death is mentioned in the _Consolation_ as well 3. Soklaros is not dubious -- P. calls him "my Soklaros" in _How Adolescents Should Learn Poetry_. There's a lot of footnote debate about whether he died young, or if he survived to the L. Mestrius Soklaros in an inscription of Hadrian.

Is it best to write this up and post it? Or to start a conversation on the talk page before posting?

Theodox (talk) 05:13, 9 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Theodox. You can make the changes in Wikipedia by all means so long as you provide reliable sources to back your changes. You don't have to necessarily start a conversation on the talk page for every change that you initiate (unless the change is debatable, controversial, not well established, and so forth). I see Timoxena has a mention in the article but not Charon and Soklaros. You can add these but remember to provide reliable backing source lest other editors remove the claim. Please read WP:RS so that you get an idea on this. Cheers. Rasnaboy (talk) 05:37, 9 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Date Formatting

Thank you for your active contributions to the roster, and keep at it, you are doing a wonderful job.

As part of the date formatting team my job is to ensure that pages display the correct date format. Whether thats Day/Month/Year for most nations, Month/Day/Year for the US, and Year/Month/Day for East Asian nations. Please ensure you can remain consistent when formatting pages. Your https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pongal_(festival) uses a mix of two different formats. Either change all the dates on the relevant pages to fit in the Month/Day/Year (American format) or choose the format that India including Tamil Nadu uses Day/Month/Year.

If you would prefer to use script assisted formatting please refer to the MOS:NUM page attached to the side of this message.

Thank you for your co-operation. With Kind Regards, Belotto (Mortadella) Mortadella42 (talk) 15:28, 20 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello, Rasnaboy. I noticed that your recent edit to Veetrirundha Perumal Temple added a link to an image on an external website or on your computer, or to a file name that does not exist on Wikipedia's server. For technical and policy reasons it is not possible to use images from external sources on Wikipedia. Most images you find on the internet are copyrighted and cannot be used on Wikipedia, or their use is subject to certain restrictions. If the image meets Wikipedia's image use policy, consider uploading it to Wikipedia yourself or request that someone else upload it. See the image tutorial to learn about wiki syntax used for images. Thank you. - Sumanuil. (talk to me) 23:01, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for noticing, Sumanuil. That's not something from an external source. That was a file from the corresponding Tamil Wikipedia article (ta:வீற்றிருந்த பெருமாள் கோவில், வேப்பத்தூர்). Not sure why certain images couldn't be shared between various language projects of Wikipedia. Rasnaboy (talk) 03:08, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It was probably uploaded to Tamil Wikipedia only and not to Commons, in which case English Wikipedia can't access it. - Sumanuil. (talk to me) 04:23, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Test edits/vandalism at Arunachal Pradesh article

Hi, could you keep an eye on Arunachal Pradesh article's history? Some new user and IPs are removing content/making test edits. I've restored it to your version here. Those IPs and users may make such edits . Thanks. - 117.201.118.89 (talk) 11:53, 29 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Rasnaboy

I didn't get in any edit war. It was others who changed my edits multiple times inspire of me putting citations and references. Who is engaged in disruptive editing ? Theriyala (talk) 16:22, 30 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Theriyala: I understand you're efforts in finding sources for the claim. However, please understand that only scholarly sources like peer-reviewed academic research works are considered reliable. Any claims from tabloids, click-bait news reports, politicians, self-claimed researchers, self-published works, etc. (there are many in the list) are not to be cited as source, even if they are published. Please read what reliable sources are all about. I notice many of the claims that you make are of such nature, which will eventually be reverted. Keeping on reverting will only be considered edit warring here on Wikipedia. Also please discuss your claims on the article's talk page before adding them to the article so that other experienced editors could participate in the discussion. Thanks. February 2023

Hello. Sir, I am finding that some anonymous users are constantly reverting edits which are proper and according to the correct source. I have recently added a seasonal charter flight destination in the Airlines and Destinations section of the article Surat International Airport. And, the source I have added is a flight tracking website, but it is as per the latest data and is reliable. I know that it is usually not recommended by Wikipedia to add such sources as citations as they may not be reliable, but as I have not got any other source as news article which are reliable and as the flight service is operational as a seasonal charter flight after I found out in the flight tracking website, I added it, as whatever are the destinations from a particular airport are operational, should be present in the Airlines and Destinations section of that airport's article. So, I request you to protect the article Surat International Airport as it is being vandalised by anonymous users, and so that such incidents do not occur again in the future. Waiting for a quick response. Thank you. Altoumulus (talk) 06:23, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Am not sure if flight-tracking websites can be used as sources. We generally go by Airport Authority of India and other reliable sources, but not sure about the ones you said. I don't have admin rights, but for persistent vandalism by anonymous IPs, you can use Wikipedia:Requests for page protection to ask the admins for page protection. Regarding Chera Dynasty page, manu of them have put their own edits without any sources. I quoted scholarly sources as well. Theriyala (talk) 08:16, 9 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Yes, I noticed that the user said they made this change on the basis of recent consensus but I can't see any on the talk page. The source provided wasn't reliable or scholarly either (perhaps from some board exam preparation material). So I reverted. Moreover, in the Kural article, the span of period (range) was incorrect as well. Any update pertaining to this? Thanks. Rasnaboy (talk) 02:57, 22 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"Related Ethnic Groups" - Tamil Brahmin

I just wanted to highlight that the "Related Ethnic Groups" section is, upon reading the article and considering many events in history, quite controversial. For the record, I will be using "community" and "ethnicity" interchangeably in this post.

Although it is not directly stated, it gives the reader an impression that "Tamil People" are a monolithic "ethnicity" who follow the same customs, have similar genetics and share a cultural bond. This may be true for the majority of Tamil speakers, who have intermarried and shared cultural, societal and linguistic bonds with each other regardless of whatever community they hail from, however it is definitely not applicable in the case of the Brahmins.

First of all, it is not fully made clear in the article whether the "Tamil people" that are referred in this sense are an "ethnic group" or are just people who speak the Tamil language. Assuming the latter is the case, as it makes more sense, that makes Tamil just a language which should be acknowledged. Referring to all speakers as one monolithic identity of "Tamil people" disregards all the drastic differences there is between communities.

In the case of the Brahmins, Tamil is simply just a language and nothing more. It may vary per individual and their upbringing however as a community, the language Sanskrit is given equal or if not more importance as correctly highlighted in the article. In contrast to this, most Tamil ethnicities only regard Tamil as their language of prime importance and nothing else; most prayers are only recited in Tamil and Vedic related customs are pretty much unknown to most of the local folk, who comprise most the demographic of Tamils. Tamil Brahmins, on top of this, also have their own unique dialect of Tamil that they had developed upon entry to the Tamil Country, where a significant portion of the language takes influence from Sanskrit, the tongue that is important and native to Brahmins in general. This distinct dialect, is known as Brahmnik or Brahmin Tamil, which again is mentioned in the article. Without going into too much detail, Brahmins have always been bilingual by being able to speak or at least have knowledge of Sanskrit and by being able to speak Tamil. This is the linguistic differences between Tamils and Tamil Brahmins.

The cultural differences are vast. They are different in origins, in linguistics and in nature. The Brahmins are the custodians of the Vedic works, their ancestors had developed the works and it's under their good right to keep it well preserved. The general culture of Brahmins are in essence Vedic. The origin of Vedism, I am aware that Vedism is no longer in its pure form but I am referring to it as worship around the Vedic gods, works and practises, is from the north west of India and is, once again, not followed by or native to the Tamils. The culture of Brahmins "may" overlap with that of the natives, but this is very rarely the case. Even the biggest Tamil function, "Thai Pongal" is celebrated throughout India as Makar Shankranthi, Lohri etc.. so it isn't only a "Tamil" oriented festival that the Brahmins have adopted. The Brahmins follow the Manusmriti, which is rejected by most the natives as they feel they are unjustly treated by its stated rules.

The Brahmins follow an extremely strict "Gotra system" which is an unbroken paternal lineage descending directly from one of the Sapta Rishis. This is a Vedic practise and is extremely important in marital affairs in North India and Brahmins till this day. The Gotras can be traced directly back to where they originated from, in other words directly indicating where the ancestors of that particular Gotra came from. For most Tamil Brahmin Vadama Iyers and Iyengars, this would lead back to Haryana's Dhoshi Hills where Rishi Bhrigu was recorded of dwelling. For some it takes them to the banks of the river Saraswati before it dried up. It changes based on Gotra. The Gotra system, in some ways, has links to genetic haplogroups that have been discovered in more recent times with the help of modern technology, which leads me on to my next point.

The Brahmins have different genetics to native Tamils. Although this is a highly controversial topic, which for some weird reason many right wingers seem to take offence in, it is proven by many individuals who are qualified and well researched into the study of genetics and how DNA works. The likes of Razib Khan on Brown Pundits, ArainGang on Twitter/Medium, various studies conducted like the Narasimhan papers, the HarappaWorld GEDmatch pages etc the list goes on. If you want me to summarise the overall results and save you the research then here you are:

An average Tamil/South Indian is comprised of around:

25-30% Baloch/Neolithic Iranian Farmer DNA

0-5% Steppe DNA

55-80% ASI (Ancestral South Indian DNA) (middle castes have about 50-60 ish % while lowers have 65+)

While an average Tamil Brahmin genetically clusters with middle-upper caste North Indians, other Brahmin groups and in some cases, even Northwest Indian groups like the Kashmiri Pandits. An average Tamil Brahmin is comprised of around:

35-40% Baloch/Neolithic Iranian Farmer DNA

15-20% Steppe DNA

35-45% ASI DNA

Just for comparison purposes, an average Punjabi (not outliers e.g. Jatts, Rors) is comprised of:

40-45% Baloch/Neolithic DNA

20-25% Steppe DNA

25-35% ASI DNA

Although the Brahmins may have, in some cases, native maternal haplogroups, so do most Indians. The paternal haplogroups of Brahmins however are mostly that of R1a, G2a and certain others that are not found within Tamils who have predominantly the native haplogroups L, M and H.

Regardless, Brahmins are the outliers in virtually all states compared to the natives except Northwest India.

Any work on South Asian genetics recognises Brahmins as their own cluster/group and are genetically distant from their neighbours, in this case the Tamils.

With all of this stated it is highly questionable to link Tamil people and Tamil Brahmins together as "related ethnic groups" just because they speak the same language. They are more related to each other and North Indians, in terms of culture, religious practices, language (Sanskrit), genetics and history (many Brahmins had migrated in waves to South India upon the invitations of Kings of the time, due to beliefs of them bringing good fortune and prosperity for the temples and general land; this is backed by various inscriptions and copper plate markings gifted to these Brahmins arriving from the banks of the modern day river Yamuna, the same has also been recorded from the river Saraswati in today's Kashmir and Haryana).

So to conclude, it is not only overlooking all these differences, but is also in some ways disrespectful to just lump Tamil Brahmin culture and lifestyle to that of Tamils in general. They are distinct, they deserve to be acknowledged as such. I personally feel, if you feel it too troublesome to replace it with Pancha Gauda Brahmins or Brahmins in general, then at least remove the existing link to "Tamil People" in general.

Hope you take this rather heartfelt plea into account and act on it where possible.

Thank you for reading. Temporary 1010 (talk) 19:40, 24 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
