:Common law marriage is still recognized in 8 US states. It was also prevalent in US law in the 1800s, particularly in regions where a preacher or justice of the peace might have been hard to find. The relationship between Blaylock and Earp has been generally established as having reached the level of common law marriage given their lengthy cohabitation.
