One of Lombardi’s first investigative jobs was to cover the 2018 misdemeanor drugs charges and the later felony domestic violence case surrounding the 49er’s [[Reuben Foster]] in 2018, the latter of which was ultimately closed. Another commentator from another network stated about his research on both sets of charges that “he stood out with his coverage”. <ref>{{Cite web |date=2018-06-22 |title=Change is afoot on the 49ers beat |url=https://www.ninersnation.com/2018/6/22/17492222/49ers-beat-writers-matt-barrows-the-athletic |access-date=2023-09-12 |website=www.ninersnation.com |language=en}}</ref>
