Jiang Xi-reng (simplified Chinese: 蒋锡礽; traditional Chinese: 蔣錫礽; pinyin: Jiǎng Xīréng; born July 27, 1927), better known by his stage name Henry O, is a Chinese-American actor, known for his character roles in film and on television. He won the Silver Shell for Best Actor for his performance in A Thousand Years of Good Prayers (2007).
Early years
O was born Jiang Xireng in Shanghai in 1927, and attended British and American missionary schools, where he learned English. He trained as stage actor under the Stanislavski method, and ran the Children's Art Theatre for thirty years. His daughter is author Ji-li Jiang.[1]
During the Cultural Revolution, he was falsely accused of counter-revolutionary crimes and was detained and forced to do hard labour by the Chinese government. He would later be rehabilitated.
Career in the United States
Jiang and his family moved to the United States in the early 1980s to take care of his daughter Ji-yun's children. He continued stage acting, then made his on-screen debut in the NBC television miniseries Marco Polo (1982), which was partly shot in China, the first Western production to do so.[2]
He subsequently appeared in his first film, the Oscar-winning The Last Emperor (1987), playing the Lord Chamberlain of the Forbidden City. For these early roles, he was credited under his birth name, before he adopted the stage name Henry O, after his favorite author O. Henry.
In 2007, he won Silver Shell for Best Actor at the San Sebastián International Film Festival for his performance in Wayne Wang's A Thousand Years of Good Prayers.
Personal life
O and his family left China and settled in the United States in the 1980s to take care of his daughter Ji-yun's children. Henry O is his stage named and is derived from O. Henry.
O resides in San Francisco area[3] and is married to Ying Chen. They have three children including Jiang Ji-yong, Jiang Ji-yun and author Ji-li Jiang. O is fluent in both English and Mandarin Chinese.
