Casa Dom Aquino is a historic building in Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, Brazil.

The house is noted as the birthplace of two of the most influential men of modern Mato Grosso, the politician and physician Joaquim Murtinho (1848-1911), an early pioneer of homeopathy in Brazil; and Dom Aquino.

Casa Dom Aquino was listed as a state-level listed historic structure by Mato Grosso in 1997.

Timeline
Casa Dom Aquino was built by the Murtinho family as the plantation house of Fazenda Bela Vista. A renovation of the house in 2006 uncovered numerous artifacts that reveal details of the daily life in the residence. Findings included English crockery, azulejos, coins, ceramic flooring tiles, and the bones of game animals. The area of present-day Avenida Beira Rio was once a wooded area, and wild game was apparently part of the diet of the house.

While now part of the dense urban fabric of Cuiabá, the house was built a few meters from the Cuiabá River. The river was the only source of transportation and an additional source of food and water. A renovation in 2006 revealed that the plantation house depended on fish from the Cuiabá River and game animals from the surrounding forest; it reveals that residents of the Cuiabá region were self-sufficient, even in 19th-century Brazil.

Casa Dom Aquino was nicknamed "Predestination House" (Casa Predetinada) by historians. It is the birthplace of two of the most influential figures in the modern Mato Grosso:

* Joaquim Murtinho (1848-1911), a Brazilian physician and politician. Murtinho was born in Cuiabá, but moved to Rio de Janeiro to study civil engineering and medicine. He completed a doctorate at the Faculty of Medicine of Rio de Janeiro in 1875. Murtinho is noted as an early pioneer of homeopathy in Brazil. He left medicine to pursue a political career, serving two long non-consecutive terms as Federal Deputy of Mato Grosso to the Brazilian Senate, 1890-1896 and 1903-1911. Murtinho also served as the federal Minister of Industry, and Commerce (1899-1902) under President Prudente de Morais and Minister of Finance (1898-1902) under the same administration) under President Campos Sales. Murtinho pursued a deeply austere and controversial fiscal plan under Campo Sales to correct the policies of president Rui Barbosa.

Both men were deeply influential to the development of both Mato Grosso and Cuiabá.

Casa Dom Aquino based through various owners. Zaira Cunha Esteves donated the house to Father Wanir Delfino Cesar in 1959. Cesar planned to open a local history museum in the house with a focus on notable elites of Cuiaba; the idea was later abandoned.

The house was passed to the State Secretariat of Culture of Mato Grosso and Instituto Ecossistemas e População Tradicionais (ECOSS) in 2006 to open the Museum of Pre-History of Mato Grosso.

Casa Dom Aquino now houses the Museum of Pre-History of Mato Grosso. It is operated by a partnership of the State Secretariat of Culture of Mato Grosso and the Instituto Ecossistemas e População Tradicionais (ECOSS).

Structure
Casa Dom Aquino was built in the simple Portuguese colonial style. It has a "u"-shaped floor plan and consists of a single floor divided into 12 rooms.

The facade of the house directly faces the Cuiabá River, and the entrance is only a few meters from the riverbank. The orientation of the house towards the river demonstrates its importance both as the only transportation link between the house and the rest of the city; archeological evidence also shows that the river was a source of fish, which made up an important part of the diet of the house. While the arrangement of Casa Dom Aquino was not unique to Mato Grosso in the 19th century, it is the only remaining example of a riverfront-oriented house in Cuiabá.

Museum of Pre-History
The Museum of Pre-History opened in Casa Dom Aquino in 2006. It houses a collection of approximately 1,000 archeological and paleontological artifacts from the state of Mato Grosso. The museum has a four rooms for a permanent exhibit space; the other rooms in the house are used for workshops, housing the collection, and office space.

Protected status
Casa Dom Aquino was listed as a state-level historic structure by the State Secretary for Culture, Sports and Leisure of Mato Grosso (Secretaria de Estado de Cultura, Esporte e Lazer de Mato Grosso, SECEL) under listing no. 7/97 published July 24, 1997.

Access
The house operates as a museum and may be visited.

Footnote
:A.AThe house is known as Casa Dom Aquino, despite being both the birthplace of Joaquim Murtinho and Dom Francisco de Aquino Correia. It now houses the Mato Grosso Museum of Prehistory.
