The 2024 Iranian consulate airstrike in Damascus was a suspected Israeli airstrike targeting an Iranian consulate annex building adjacent to the Iranian embassy in Damascus, Syria on 1 April 2024.[1][3] The strike killed eight people, including a senior Quds Force commander of the IRGC, Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi. The other fatalities included five members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps and two Iranian advisors.[4]

Background

Since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011, many international airstrikes have been carried out in the Middle East. The start of the Israel–Hamas war in 2023, caused an increase in tensions between Iran and Israel, as part of the ongoing Iran–Israel proxy conflict. In Syria, there is a large presence of Iranian troops as well as allies including Hezbollah and foreign militias from Iraq and Afghanistan.

On 19 February 2023, an airstrike, suspected to have been carried out by the Israeli Air Force, targeted sites in the Damascus Governorate, including a residential building.[5] Five fatalities and 15 injuries have been reported, with some of the wounded in a serious state.[6] The February 2023 strike took place in the same area where Hezbollah's senior commander, Imad Mughniyeh, was assassinated in 2008.[7]

From 12 to 22 October 2023, Israel launched at least three attacks on airports in Syria, particularly on Damascus and Aleppo,[8][9] killing two workers from the Syrian meteorology service based at Damascus International Airport.

On 20 January 2024, Brigadier General Sadegh Omidzadeh, an intelligence officer with the IRGC Quds Force in Syria, along with four other IRGC officers, were reportedly killed in an Israeli airstrike in Damascus.[10][11]

Attack

On 1 April 2024, the Iranian consulate annex building adjacent to the Iranian embassy in Damascus, Syria, was destroyed by a suspected Israeli airstrike. Iranian ambassador Hossein Akbari alleged that the consulate building "was targeted with six missiles from Israeli F-35 warplanes."[12]

The attack was made on Farvardin 12 in the Solar Hijri calendar, coinciding with an Iranian national holiday: Iranian Islamic Republic Day.

Victims

The suspected main target of the attack was Quds Force commander of the IRGC, Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi. In addition to Zahedi, casualties included Zahedi's deputy Sardar Haji Rahimi and five Iranian officials: Hossein Aman Elahi, Sayid Mehdi Jalalati, Ali Agha Babaei, Sayid Ali Salehi Roozbahani, and Mohsen Sedaghat.[13]

Reactions

Syria's Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad said, "We strongly condemn this atrocious terrorist attack that targeted the Iranian consulate building in Damascus and killed a number of innocents."[14]

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Nasser Kanaani, strongly condemned the attack. He described it as "gross violation" of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961 and called for the international community and UN to "condemn the act in the strongest possible terms and should take necessary measures against the aggressor."[15][16]

The United Arab Emirates condemned the attack in a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.[17]

The Russian Federation condemned the attack, with a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs describing it as unacceptable and blaming Israel for it.[18]

Pakistan condemned the attack, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressing its condolences to the families of the victims and describing it as a violation of international law and the UN Charter.[19]

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar issued a statement condemning the attack and expressed its condolences to the families of the victims.[20]
