Hendrick Hudson High School is a public high school in Montrose, New York, United States. It draws its students from the neighboring hamlets of Verplanck, Cortlandt Manor, Crugers, the villages of Croton-on-Hudson and Buchanan, and the city of Peekskill. It is part of the larger Hendrick Hudson Central School District.

During the 2021-22 school year, there were 725 students enrolled at Hendrick Hudson, averaging about 180 students per grade.[1]

Administration

The acting principal of Hendrick Hudson is Mrs. Lauren Scollins. The assistant principal is Mr. Nick Katsaris and the acting assistant principal is Dr. Phyllis Amori.[2]

Academics

In the 2007–2008 school year, Hendrick Hudson High School offered 50 sections of 12 Advanced Placement courses in eight different subject areas. It also began offering a three-year science research course sequence to tenth graders through the State University of New York at Albany in the High School program. There are two college level language classes offered through Syracuse University Project Advance (SUPA), in Italian and French.

In 2010, Hendrick Hudson High School introduced a new four-year engineering program through Project Lead the Way (PLTW). Since the 2011–2012 school year, a second four-year Project Lead the Way program has been offered in the biomedical sciences.[3]

Student Government

The Hendrick Hudson High School Student Government was a long-time student advocacy club comprising of a five person Executive board; President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Social Media Manager (vacant). It was advised by Micheal Wiktowitck, an American history teacher, until the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic closed down Hendrick Hudson. Former Global history teacher, Mariel Pipchinski assumed advisement power of the body per direction of Ex-Principal James L. Mackin Jr.

Administrations (2018 - Present Day)

The Guida Administration (2018-2019)

after a 10 person Presidential race, President Emily Guida, a senior, was elected President of Hendrick Hudson High School in October of 2018. Her cabinet consisted of Vice President Daniel S. Saleem, the youngest person (freshman) to ever be elected Vice President, Secretary Parker Piccolo-Hill, sophomore and Treasurer, Ethan Terasakis, junior. The Administration oversaw the last ever "Fried Chicken and Waffles Days" at the school as well as the last outdoor school spirit Pep-Rally before the COVID-19 pandemic. The Hendrick Hudson High School was also about to win the "News 12 School Spirit Competition" that year.

The Hornbarger-Anderson Administration (2019 - 2020) After the closest election between candidates, senior, Manuel Socorro, seniors, Josh Anderson/Cameron Hornbarger, and sophomore, Dan Saleem, The Co-Presidential ticker of Hornbarger and Anderson won the Presidency with Parker Piccolo-Hill becoming the Vice President. During their tenure, Presidents Anderson and Hornbarger placed a greater emphasis on event-based agendas. All programing came to a halt after the COVID-19 pandemic forced Hendrick Hudson to close in-person learning on March 13th, 2020. The Student Government became inactive indefinitely.

The Saleem Administration (2020 - 2022) No election was held in the year 2020 or 2021 and instead, students, Mackin, Pipchinski nominated and selected then-junior, Daniel S. Saleem (better known as Dan Saleem) to be the President for the next two years. President Saleem, to this day is the only President to serve two consecutives terms. Saleem was accompanied by Kayla Cohen as his Vice President, Julia Pennella as Secretary, and Tyler Robinson as Treasurer. Under the Saleem Administration, the entire student government was restructured and renewed with the creation of a student government social media account; state of school address in mid-January, and the added responsibility of the President, making the morning announcements and MCing the annual Spirit Pep Rallies. In trhe year 2021-2022 there was an unprecedented amount of Spirit Weeks. Saleem often had clashes with administration when it came to event-based concerns including the slow-construction time of the High School's Theater and lack of a Homecoming dance. Saleem's administration responded to these issues by pressuring the school to ensure the Theater would be opened for the spring and hosting a grass-roots Homecoming dance in the town of Verplank. Saleem conducted unprecedented weekly town-halls in the school's cafeteria as he attempted to achieve two "big-ticket" issues; the lack of a student-seat on the Board of Education and the absence of open campus at Hendrick Hudson following a car accident in 2002. After working with President Carol Abraham, Saleem began discussions with the Superintendent's office before Principal Mackin ordered Saleem to end all communication with the district office and threatened impeachment/removal if he continued to pursue the project. Afterwards, Saleem's plans to pursue open campus were sandbagged and his graduation speech was taken away by the principal a day before the principal, himself was fired and then re-installed as Buchannan-Verplank Elementary School Principal a year later.

The Cohen Administration (2022 - 2023) After the end of Saleem's 2-year legacy, a standard was set where the only elections that would occur with the Vice-Presidential office whereas the VP would take over after the outgoing President graduated. The Vice-Presidential election was a 3-person race between George Wright, an outspoken critic of President Saleem, Shaun Saleem, the younger brother of President Dan Saleem, and Aly McManus, all sophomores. After George Wright's victory, The Cohen administration attempted to build off of the policies that Saleem had laid out, but the firing of both the Principal and Superintendent led to a lack of communication and clarity among student leadership on who to go to. The Administration worked on standardizing a majority of the work that was done the year before while fostering a greater use of the school store across from the cafeteria and holding the first PTSA-run homecoming dance.

Chorus

The choral program comprises three choruses: Concert Choir, an SATB group open to all Hen Hud students; Hen Hud Harmonizers, an audition-based SATB group; and a Treble Chorus, also known as the Treble Makers, an audition-based women's treble chorus. The Treble Makers won Best Overall Choir and Best Women's Chorus at the Music in the Parks festival in May 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2015. The Treble Chorus was invited to sing at the celebration in May 2009 commemorating the Aaron Copland House (which is located within the Hen Hud district[4]) as a National Historic Landmark.[5][6] The Treble Makers have recently been collaborating with British rock violinist Daisy Jopling, having performed with her and her band at the Paramount Center for the Arts[7] in Peekskill, New York,[8] as well as the Peter Norton Symphony Space in Manhattan.[9]

At the 2010 NYSSMA Majors Festival, both the Treble Chorus and the Concert Choir (a select SATB group) achieved Gold with Distinction ratings on their performances.[citation needed]

The Hendrick Hudson Starboard Stars Drama Club, in 2010, was nominated for six Metro Awards, and won for Outstanding Orchestra.[10]

Honors and awards

The choral department has sent student musicians to the NYSSMA All-State Convention in Rochester, New York, where they have participated in either the Mixed or Women's Chorus. In 2009, three students were selected; in 2010, one student; and in 2011, three students.[14] All were members of the award-winning Treble Makers.

The Hendrick Hudson Speech and Debate team hosts the annual Malcolm A. Bump Memorial Tournament, one of the largest debate tournaments in New York state. In 2005, the team was rated 13th overall in the country.[15]
