Prof. Yehuda Shoenfeld, the founder of the Zabludowicz Center for Autoimmune Diseases at the Sheba Medical Center, is a truly unique person: he is a world leader in the research and treatment of autoimmune diseases, with more than 2,350 publications in leading scientific journals and an H index of 168). Prof. Shoenfeld is one of Israel's top physicians and scientists, dedicating his life to two fields: autoimmunity and public health. He has already been awarded 24 prizes for his contributions to these fields, including the ''Eular'' 2005 award and the ''Ometz'' 2016 prize.

In fact, these two fields, autoimmunity and public health, converge in Prof. Shoenfeld's medical ''credo,'' endeavors, and achievements. This convergence is due to his incessant efforts toward spreading knowledge to both specialists and the general public. The professional audience is reached via instituting and organizing major, prestigious international conferences on autoimmunity, founding and editing the most important journals in his field, and publishing articles, chapters in books as well as textbooks.

Besides, the majority of his cited papers have nothing to do with vaccines or autoimmunity.
Prof. Shoenfeld has been acknowledged internationally as a leader in the field of autoimmunity, thanks to his outstanding (both qualitatively and quantitatively) scientific achievements: 1) contributing significantly to the deciphering of the causality and mechanisms of autoimmune diseases; 2)  identifying and defining new syndromes (Shoenfeld's Asia syndrome, hyperferritinemic syndrome); and 3) creating new treatments with human antibodies (IVIG) by developing peptides to become ground-breaking treatments of autoimmune diseases - not only in animals but also in humans - and developing the new drug Tuftsin-phosphorylcholine (TPC) for treating of autoimmune diseases.

Autoimmune diseases are the third largest cause of morbidity, after cancer and heart diseases, especially among young women. Prof. Shoenfeld has undoubtedly placed autoimmune diseases on the world map, and enormously broadened the understanding of their mechanisms while simultaneously providing relief and cure to countless patients worldwide. This leads me directly to Prof. Shoenfeld's important contributions to the field of Public Health, where his achievements have several apexes:

1.     Founding the first multidisciplinary and international center for autoimmune diseases in the world, the much-acclaimed Zabludovicz Institute, where patients from Israel and all over the world are diagnosed and treated by physicians from various disciplines, young as well as established international scholars come every year to conduct innovative research, where novel therapies are being studied and applied, and - thanks to Prof. Shoenfeld's visionary pedagogic ''credo -'' medical students take active part and are encouraged to develop medical and research skills, attuned to key issues related to public health as they are to specific medical issues.

2.     Prof. Shoenfeld is the founder and editor of the Israeli Encyclopedia of Medicine - 10 volumes encompassing 5,000 entries, written by 1,200 physicians. The encyclopedia is intended for the general public.

3.     Prof. Shoenfeld wrote and edited over 67 books (see, CV.26-30), including ''inter alia:'' ''Drug; Cancer; Autoimmune Diseases;'' ''SLE;'' ''Sjogren; FMF Fybromialgia; and the Textbook of Autoantibodies.'' Prof. Shoenfeld has founded several patients' organizations for those suffering from severe diseases, such as the Israel Lupus Patients' Association, now embedded within the broader Inbar Organization - a comprehensive medical NGO for patients with autoimmune diseases. He serves as Medical Head of Inbar, contributing lectures and consultations regularly. Thanks to Prof. Shoenfeld's initiative, patients receive medical and social help in managing their lives, as well as lectures and information, conferences, and social gatherings. Prof. Shoenfeld's local activity, though it may appear minor in global terms, is infinitely vast and rewarding for the suffering individuals. Prof. Shoenfeld is a board member and chief consultant for the American Patient Organization of Autoimmune Diseases (AARDA). Moreover, in each and every International conference that he has initiated and organized, he makes a point of shifting the focus for a day from the experts to the patients. The sufferers, who are invited to attend the meetings, attend lectures, participate in discussions, and learn the latest news about their diseases.

''4.    '' In addition to 35 or so books written for the general public, Prof. Shoenfeld is the author of 60 professional textbooks. His own research has been the groundwork for a number of textbooks that address scientific theories regarding the development of autoimmune diseases. To name but a few: ''The Mosaic of Autoimmunity''; ''Infection and Autoimmunity'' (AID); ''The idiotypic Network and AID''; ''The Geo-epidemiology of AID'', ''The Antiphospholipid Syndrome''; ''Diagnostic Criteria for AID;'' ''Drug; Cancer; Autoimmune Diseases;'' ''SLE;'' ''Sjogren; FMF Fybromialgia; and Textbook of Autoantibodies.'' These books, and others, are recognized as classic textbooks that ground the medical knowledge of generations of students and experts worldwide.

5.     COVID-19, these days the world's foremost public health challenge, has become a focal point of Prof. Shoenfeld's most recent research and publishing. Having already published 15 articles related to COVID-19, he was among the first to discuss the relationship between the most dangerous outcome of COVID-19, namely the burst of the so-called "Cytokines Storm," and Ferritin; he was the first to describe the Hyperferritinemic syndromes - his most recent, but not only, discovery of syndromes (see, CV. pp. X). Prof. Shoenfeld's conceptualizations of new syndromes contributed significantly to the understanding of the mosaic-like interconnectedness of hitherto unfamiliar phenomena, like those involved in COVID-19. Adding to the complexity of the public health arena, Prof. Shoenfeld's innovative conceptualizations have been crucial to reaching correct diagnoses and determining treatments for life-threatening diseases.

6.     Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, he initiated an online weekly conference, comprising over 1000 participants from 25 countries worldwide, featuring presentations and discussions by experts on the role of the immune system and autoimmunity in COVID-19. This international COVID 19/Autoimmunity Virtual School is one of a kind. Advancing the understanding of the inner mechanisms involved in death caused by COVID-19, this global experts' forum helps to quickly spread innovative thoughts and debates about today's most urgent menace to public health, facilitating and speeding up research and publications on the prevention and cure of the still largely unknown coronavirus.

7.     Beyond his direct and indirect, and indeed outstanding and globally acknowledged contributions to public health, Prof. Shoenfeld's achievements include therapeutic inventions, syndrome identifications, and significantly advancing the treatment of autoimmune diseases. He strived throughout his life to spread knowledge to physicians, scientists, and the general public, and placed autoimmunity—the third "killer factor" - on the world's medical map'''.''' He is a member of the Israeli Academy of Sciences, an honorary member of the Slovenic Academy of Sciences, the recipient of numerous ''Doctor Honoris Causa'' titles, and teacher and mentor to more than 66 professors of internal medicine who currently head departments and units in hospitals throughout Israel, as well as a good number of them across Europe and the U.S.

8.     In 2020,he was  elected as President of Ariel University , Israel.

A 2016 paper asserting a link between HPV vaccine and behavioural problems in mice, was retracted due to concerns about its methodology and data.<ref>{{Cite news |url=https://retractionwatch.com/2017/08/15/paper-extremely-flawed-journal-retracts-paper-heavy-criticism/ |title="The paper is extremely flawed:" Journal retracts article linked to vaccines |last=McCook |first= Alison |date=2017-08-15 |access-date=2019-10-15 |language=en-US |website=Retraction Watch}}</ref>

Yehuda Shoenfeld
An interview with Yehuda Shoenfeld on Autoimmune Syndrome induced by Adjuvants (ASIA)

Yehuda Shoenfeld (born February 14, 1948)[1] is an Israeli physician and autoimmunity researcher.

Biography

Yehuda Shoenfeld works at Sheba Medical Center in Tel HaShomer and the Sackler Faculty of Medicine at Tel-Aviv University. He studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is the incumbent of the Laura Schwarz-Kipp Chair for Research of Autoimmune Diseases. Shoenfeld is the editor of two journals, Harefuah (Medicine) in Hebrew with English abstracts and Israel Medical Association Journal (IMAJ). He is co-editor-in-chief of Autoimmunity Reviews,[2] and co-editor of the Journal of Autoimmunity,[3] and member of the editorial board of the Clinical Reviews in Allergy & Immunology.[4]

Schoenfeld, who has been characterized as an anti-vaccinationist, proposed a syndrome he calls Autoimmune Syndrome Induced by Adjuvants (ASIA), which purports to be an autoimmune response to vaccine adjuvants.[5] There is a lack of reproducible evidence for any causal relationship between adjuvant and autoimmune condition.[6][7] He served on the scientific advisory board of the anti-vaccine group Children's Medical Safety Research Institute, has spoken at a number of antivaccination conferences, and has regularly appeared as an expert witness for people attempting to prove injury from vaccines in court.[8] The courts, so far, have rejected the theory that ASIA caused those injuries and questioned Schoenfeld's overall credibility as a truthful witness.

Published works

While two of Shoenfeld's scientific articles have been retracted,[9][10] he has published more than 1920 papers. Also, he has authored and edited 40 books and contributed more than 350 chapters to various books, most recently Vaccines and Autoimmunity published by Wiley Blackwell. Prof. Shoenfeld is on the editorial board of 43 medical journals.[11] Nili Cohen, President of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, has pointed out that "no human being can publish 1,939 papers" unless Shoenfeld’s true contribution to this vast amount of publications is insignificant.[12] She calculated that 1.54 papers per week have been published on average. Besides, the majority of his cited papers have nothing to do with vaccines or autoimmunity.

A 2016 paper asserting a link between HPV vaccine and behavioural problems in mice, was retracted due to concerns about its methodology and data.[13]

Awards and recognition

Shoenfeld received the EULAR Prize (Austria, 2005). He received the Nelson’s Prize for Humanity and Science from U.C. Davis (U.S., 2008). He was honored as Doctoris Honoris Causa by Debrecen University (Hungary, 2009). He has awarded a Life Contribution Prize in Internal Medicine (Israel, 2012), as well as the ACR Master Award (U.S., 2013). He is an honorary member of the Hungarian Association of Rheumatology, Slovenian National Academy of Sciences and the Royal Society of Physicians (UK).[11]
