Gilbert "El Niño" Melendez (born April 12, 1982) is a Mexican-American professional mixed martial arts fighter from Santa Ana, CA. Currently fighting out of San Francisco, CA he competes in the lightweight division of Pride Fighting Championships and Strikeforce. He has trained extensively with Jake Shields, Cesar Gracie, Nick Diaz, and Dave Terrell.

MMA career

He has an undefeated record of 12-0 and is the Strikeforce Lightweight Champion. Melendez holds a victory over legendary Japanese fighter Rumina Sato. His most recent win was against top ranked Tatsuya Kawajiri at PRIDE Shockwave 2006[1].
