The historic

Bertrand Road suspension bridge

crossing the Waitara River acting as a link between Lepperton and Tikorangi the bridge was originally built in 1897. then was rebuilt in 1927 using the original design.

In 1985 the bridge was closed to vehicles with foot traffic an recreational use such as bridge swinging an abseiling permitted until it was deemed unsafe in 2003/2004 and their was fund raising scheme setup to save the bridge, witch included "buy a plank" were people could have there name engraved on a bridge blank for a sizable donation, other funding was received from the TSB community trust and the N.Z. Lottery Environment and Heritage Committee.

The bridge has now reopened fully rebuilt in keeping with the original design as much as possible the existing cable-blocks were reused . Maximum effect 07:53, 29 May 2007 (UTC) Taranaki N.Z.
