SPACEWAY-3 is part of the Hughes Network Systems constellation of broadband Internet Protocol network service satellites. The third satellite in the SPACEWAY series, it is currently under construction with plans to launch in August 2007 on an Ariane 5.

In March 2007 Hughes Network Systems switched from a Sea Launch Rocket to an Ariane 5 Launch Vehicle due to a launch failure on Sea Launch Rocket in January 2007. It is expected to provide broadband Internet Protocol network services to Hughes Network Systems customers with its Ka-band communications payload.

The satellites called SPACEWAY-1 and SPACEWAY-2 have been launched and provide high definition television to DirecTV customers. SPACEWAY-1 and SPACEWAY-2 were originally part of the SPACEWAY system envisioned as a global Ka-band communications system before they were retasked by DirecTV.
