A Death Eater and head of a pure-blood wizarding family, he lived with his wife Narcissa (born Narcissa Black) and their son Draco at the Malfoy mansion in Wiltshire prior to his incarceration at Azkaban prison for his role in the attack on the Department of Mysteries in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Malfoy was a governor of the famous Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, until he was fired for threatening the families of the other governors, forcing them to suspend the school's headmaster, Albus Dumbledore.

According to Forbes magazine, Lucius Malfoy is currently number 12 on their fictional wealthiest characters list.[1]

In the Harry Potter film series, Malfoy is played by British actor Jason Isaacs.

Background

Lucius Malfoy (birthdate, according to internal chronology, in 1954) is the son of Abraxas Malfoy. He was educated at Hogwarts, where he was in Slytherin House. He was also a prefect by the time Severus Snape had entered Hogwarts.

Through giving gifts of money to St Mungo's and the Ministry of Magic, Malfoy has become very well connected and frequently uses his political influence to further his own ends.

He abandoned the Death Eaters after Voldemort's disappearance, later claiming to have been bewitched, or placed under the Imperius Curse. This explanation was accepted by the Ministry of Magic.

Nothing is known about his mother. But in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Abraxas was mentioned by Draco Malfoy. Expecting special treatment from Horace Slughorn, Draco tried to get in discussion with him about Abraxas who had recently died of dragon pox.

In the books

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Just before Draco and Harry's second year at Hogwarts, Malfoy plants Tom Riddle's diary in Ginny Weasley's potions cauldron while she is shopping for school supplies at Flourish & Blotts, in a plot to use her to reopen the Chamber of Secrets, which would lead to attacks on muggle-born students. Malfoy knew the diary was cleverly enchanted, but was not aware that it was one of Voldemort's Horcruxes, and that it contained a part of the Dark Lord's soul. Malfoy intended to use the opening of the Chamber of Secrets by Ginny to discredit her father, Arthur Weasley, then Head of the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement.

Malfoy's plans are ultimately thwarted with the help of the Malfoys' house-elf Dobby, and Harry Potter, but not before the Chamber is opened and Malfoy uses the ensuing terror to influence the school's Board of Governors to discredit and dismiss Dumbledore as Headmaster.

Subsequently, Harry tricks Malfoy into setting Dobby free.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Draco is attacked by Buckbeak the hippogriff after the boy insults him, but he is not seriously injured. However, Lucius uses all his influence on the Ministry of Magic to sentence the beast to death and to get Rubeus Hagrid fired. In the end, his plans are turned down as Hagrid is cleared and Buckbeak is able to flee as he is rescued by Harry and Hermione.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Lucius first appears with his family in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire during the Quidditch World Cup, sharing prime seats in the Top Box with Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge, thanks to his donations to St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. Later in that book, when Voldemort rises again and summons his Death Eaters, Malfoy rejoins him, claiming that he had done everything he could all along to find Voldemort and help him rise again (though Voldemort knows he is lying). Harry, who witnesses Malfoy's declaration of loyalty to Voldemort, tells Minister Fudge, who refuses to believe him, and the wealthy Malfoy maintains strong ties with the Ministry.[HP4]

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Malfoy appears before Harry's hearing, talking privately with Fudge. Mr. Weasley reveals that he uses generous donations to the Ministry and affiliated groups in order to get laws passed or delayed, depending on how they affect his lifestyle.

The Malfoys use their influence on the house-elf Kreacher to extract him the information about one of Harry's weaknesses: his relation with his godfather Sirius Black. Voldemort uses this information to create an illusion of Sirius being tortured by him. The Malfoys tell Kreacher to attack Buckbeak in order to get Sirius aiding him, and to tell Harry that Sirius is indeed being tortured in the Ministry so that the boy goes there.

When Harry and his friends break into the Hall of Prophecy, Malfoy is the leader of the Death Eaters who were to retrieve the prophecy from him. Lucius tried by several ways to get the prophecy from Harry without breaking it, but the boy and his friends manage to escape from the Hall of Prophecy. Malfoy also argues with Bellatrix Lestrange, at one point exchanging spells from her when Bellatrix attempts to hurt Harry. Malfoy organises his fellow Death Eaters into groups to find Potter and finally meet him in the Hall of Death. Bellatrix Lestrange attempts to persuade Harry to deliver the prophecy to Lucius by torturing Neville Longbottom. Harry is about to give it to Malfoy when the Order of the Phoenix breaks into the Ministry and begins to duel the Death Eaters. Malfoy meets Harry, Neville Longbottom and Remus Lupin. Harry passes the prophecy to Neville (who later breaks it accidentally) and hits Malfoy with an impediment jinx, temporarily distracting him. Dumbledore himself arrives at the end of the battle and Malfoy is captured and sent to Azkaban.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Malfoy is still in Azkaban as of book six. His failure at the Department of Mysteries, combined with the accidental destruction of a valuable Horcrux, a shard of Voldemort's soul, deeply angers Voldemort. Voldemort recruits Lucius's eager teenaged son Draco Malfoy to complete an impossibly difficult and dangerous task: to bring Death Eaters into Hogwarts and to murder Albus Dumbledore. This is intended as a slow torture for the boy's parents.

As Malfoy is sent to Azkaban, he is unable to save his son.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

By the final book, Voldemort has given Malfoy his freedom, though he looks significantly worse for the wear. Voldemort treats him with great contempt and his credit is not very good indeed. Voldemort has hijacked his house for Headquarters and is forcing his son to do Dark deeds against his nature. Voldemort borrows his wand to use against Harry, claiming that Lucius has no use for it. It is later destroyed. Later in the book, Lucius, along with his wife and sister-in-law accidentally allow Harry Potter to escape from Malfoy Manor. Voldemort punishes them severely, eventually putting them under house arrest.

In the final book, despite his long-standing position as a Death Eater and Voldemort's advocate of pureblood supremacy, Lucius is revealed to have redeeming qualities. During the final battle at Hogwarts, he tries to talk Voldemort into letting him into the battlefield to locate his son. It is evident that he's decided his love for his family is more important than his dedication to the war. He and the rest of his family are reunited at the end of the book.

Following Voldemort's death, Lucius, Narcissa and Draco all manage to "weasel their way" out of being sent to Azkaban due to Narcissa aiding Harry in the Forbidden Forest.[2]
