Pompous describes a character trait whereby a person with it is given to acting in a superior, self-centred manner. This can be expressed by the use of grandiose language in speech, often accompanied by the use of theatrical and over-complicated gestures. A person who is described as pompous could also be described as bombastic or pretentious.

The etymology of pompous is from Middle English; in turn from Old French, pompeux; which came from Late Latin, pompsus; and starting from Latin, pompa.
