Lietuvos Geležinkeliai (translated "Lithuanian Railways," abbreviated as LG) is the national, state-owned railway company of Lithuania. It operates all railway lines in the country.

LG's main network is consists of 1749 km broad gauge railways (of which 122 km are electrified), there is also a few narrow gauge and 22 km of standard gauge lines.

History
In 1851 the occupant tsarist Government of Russia has made a decision to build St.Petersburg - Warsaw railway line. The line included a stretch Daugavpils - Vilnius - Kaunas - Virbalis which was started in 1858 and finished in 1860.When the Kaiser army occupied Lithuania in 1915, the railway has become the main supplier of food staff and ammunition for the German army.In 1918 lithuanian independence was restored, and in 1919 Lithuanian Government, residing in Kaunas has concluded an agreement with Germany on the hand over of the local railway assets to the Ministry of Transport.During the first post-war years Lithuanian railways had to reconstruct the tracks, connecting them into a complete network and only then think of improving their efficiency. In 1923 Klaipėda region was given back to Lithuania, and Klaipėda port had became an indivisible part of Lithuanian railway system. In 1940 USSR occupied Lithuania, and railway activities were reorganized and all the agreements of Lithuania concluded with the neighbouring countries have been terminated. In 1941, nazis changed most of the network from broad gauge to standard gauge, which was changed back by soviets in 1944.During soviet times all of the Baltic states railways were managed from Riga.In 1991, the railways of the Baltic region were once again divisioned into seperate railway companies.
