Do we have a cite on her mother being Irish-American? I seem to remember reading once her mother was Italian-American. MK2 18:36, 18 November 2005 (UTC)

where's a citation for "downplaying" or not "acknowledging" her mixed heritage? that comment implies or assumes that her "race" should be some kind of primary concern for her. why should it? "downplaying" compared to what?

the wiki very clearly makes my point for me, in a subtle way: it says her father was "an african-american man"--- which is totally and absolutely uninformative, along with a corresponding inane comment about her mother. if the wiki can't come up with anything encyclopedic to say about her mother and father, THEN WHAT does the wiki-writer expect Beals to "[up]play" about them or about their so-called "races"? in other words, how can she be said to "downplay" her heritage-- WITHOUT ANY CITATIONS, mind you-- when the wiki itself has nothing intelligent to note about her heritage?

just think about that. "She downplays her heritage! Her father is african-american, her mother is white." --so what's the point?

it's ridiculous. are we supposed to believe there's some kind of objective standard somewhere for exactly how much a person should "play" (up/medium/down) their [racial?] heritage?

the article apparently used to be even worse, since the other post on this discussion page asks "is the term mulatto necessary" which shouldn't have to be asked. but since you asked, i'll answer: no it isn't necessary. at best it's irrelevant (especially as given), and at worse it's an offensive antiquated expression.

wiki-writers are obsessed with race and symptomatic of the larger american pathological obsession. i read the Casino Royale (2006 / new james bond film in the making) wiki and there were utterly childish and foolish-- and confused or odd-- remarks about the implausibility of rumours about a non-white actor playing james bond (specifically, that guy who played an mi6 agent in The World Is Not Enough, who isn't white). felix leiter wasn't white in Never Say Never Again, though he was a white guy for all previous appearances. it doesn't matter. the bond actors also have had different actual national origins: doesn't matter. they've also had different faces and bodies: that didn't stop the studio from hiring someone without sean connery's face when he retired.

but the saddest part of all is that reactionary fools will read my comments here and think, or say, "AH, LOOK AT THIS POLITICALLY-CORRECT LIBERAL PLAYING THE RACE CARD." but the fact is there's no rational basis for the text in question to be included in the wiki.

"half black"????!!!!! I certainly doubt she is "half black" as in her biological father is of 100% African ancestry. She is VERY light skinned. In terms of genetics, it is impossible, yes impossible, for her to be of half black ancestry and look like a white woman. I'm guessing her real father is akin to Barack Obama in terms of skin tone and ancestry. Look at Radisha Jones for what I am getting at! (24.62.108.124 (talk) 23:51, 1 April 2008 (UTC))

That is inaccurate. There are many different shades of dark skintone in 100% African people, not everyone is the actually black shade that almost shimmers blue :) I have grown up with neighbours where one parent was African, with a pretty dark skintone, and the other was very white, with red hair and freckles. They had three children, of which one had afro-curly darkblonde hair, green eyes and a light cream skin tone. The other two kids had a nearly the same shade of medium brown skin tone. About the article

I have wondered the relevance of the information provided in the Beals article myself. It doesn't follow a structure... I guess it is time to gather some info and make it a good article. I believe Beals' racial issues should be mentioned in the trivia section instead. --TLW 19:58, 16 July 2006 (UTC).

Agreed. She's too great of an actress to have such a page. As for the race thing, I will have to look around for an article I read a while back in which she mentions "the tragic mulatto girl." She compairs this novel or character to herself.--xsarahberries 23:17, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
