Middle name

It seems obvious from the preponderance of references cited that Gibbon did not have a middle name. He certainly did not use one when he signed correspondence in the Official Records. In light of this, it is appropriate that the various purported middle names that he may have had be listed in the footnote, not prominently at the start of the article. Agreed, I'm not sure where the Gaff's got that info, but I'm convinced there's not enough evidence to go with Oliver other than to note it in a footnote. Thanks for the info.Kingwhick (talk) 02:35, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Gibbon's mother's last name

Her name was definitely Lardner. Gibbon's biographers Lavery and Jordan discuss her prominently and refer to her as Lardner. Gaff also notes her last name as Lardner. Gibbon's brother was named Lardner. His daughter was named Catherine Lardner Gibbon. The Nicholas Biddle Gibbon (John's brother) papers at UNC Charlotte note her name as Lardner: [1]. The genealogical Website referred to had three typographical errors as she is clearly refered to as Lardner on this page: [2] and this page with the exception of three typos. [3]. The family name was most definitely Lardner. Kingwhick (talk) 02:26, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
