Jasmine Kinkade[1][4] (better-known as Jasmine Fiore; February 18, 1981 – August 15, 2009) from Santa Cruz, California, was a swimsuit model, events promoter, and Las Vegas socialite.[5][6] Fiore had also obtained a real estate license and was about to open a gym and personal training center.[7] Her body was discovered on August 15, 2009 strangled and stuffed into a suitcase. A former reality show contestant, Ryan Alexander Jenkins (? – August 23, 2009), was named the suspect. Jenkins was found dead in a Hope, British Columbia hotel room on August 23, 2009 of an apparent suicide.[8]

Relationship with Ryan Jenkins

Jasmine Fiore had met Canadian-born Ryan Jenkins at a Las Vegas casino shortly after wrapping up filming on Megan Wants a Millionaire and the pair married two days later. Jenkins and Fiore had married shortly before his time on the third season of I Love Money. According to court records, Jenkins was charged in June 2009 in Clark County, Nevada, with a misdemeanor count of "battery constituting domestic violence" for hitting Fiore in the arm. Jenkins was expected to go on trial in December.[9] The pair had reconciled shortly before Fiore's death and were reportedly traveling to Las Vegas for a poker game. Fiore's mother claims that the two fought frequently and that Jenkins had been jealous of Fiore's friendships with her ex-boyfriends.[7]

Death

Fiore's badly beaten and crushed body was discovered in a suitcase that was placed inside of a dumpster in Buena Park, California, about 20 miles southeast of Los Angeles, on the morning of August 15, 2009. She had also been strangled. According to Buena Park police, Fiore's teeth and fingers had been removed before her nude body was stuffed into the suitcase. Authorities believe the mutilation was an unsuccessful attempt to impede efforts to identify Fiore's body, which became identified using the serial numbers from her breast implants.[10] Fiore was last seen alive with Jenkins at a poker party on Friday, August 14, 2009 in San Diego.

Investigators reported that the couple checked into the L'Auberge Del Mar hotel the night of August 13. Jenkins left the hotel the following morning of August 14, with a gray suitcase. Fiore was not seen alive again. The next day, August 15, Jenkins reported Fiore missing.[9][11]

VH1's response

Jenkins had been a contestant on two VH1's reality shows, Megan Wants a Millionaire as well as the yet-unaired third season of I Love Money. Following the announcement that Jenkins was connected with the murder, VH1 removed Megan Wants a Millionaire from circulation and its schedule, as well as removing the show's page from its website. The show has been postponed until further notice. VH1 also issued the following comment:

Ryan Jenkins was a contestant on Megan Wants A Millionaire, an outside production, produced and owned by 51 Minds, that is licensed to VH1. The show completed production at the end of March. Given the unfortunate circumstances, VH1 has postponed any future airings. This is a tragic situation and our thoughts go out to the victim's family.[12]

Suspect

Ryan Jenkins (Nevada booking photo from June 2009) was a fugitive suspect wanted for Fiore's murder.

On August 19 U.S. Customs stated that Jenkins' status of "Person of Interest" was upgraded to "Potential Suspect". Whatcom County Sheriff's Department of Washington State received witness reports of Jenkins' black BMW SUV towing a boat towards the Canadian border. Deputies later found the SUV and an empty boat trailer at a marina in Blaine, Washington. The U.S. Coast Guard reportedly encountered a speedboat believed to be Jenkins' at sea but the vessel fled into Canadian waters. Canadian authorities then gave chase with a helicopter and a boat but the suspect speedboat crossed back into US waters, landing in Point Roberts, a peninsula that extends south of the 49th parallel, but is not connected by land with the rest of the United States.[13][14] Point Roberts shares a relatively unguarded and forested border with the British Columbia community of Tsawwassen.[15][16] On August 21 Jenkins arrived at the Thunderbird Motel in Hope, British Columbia in a vehicle with Alberta license plates, but stayed in the car while a young woman paid cash for 2 nights accomodation. After no one checked out on Sunday, August 23, and having noticed suspiciously little activity over the weekend, the motel manager and his nephew decided to check on the room. Jenkins was found deceased, apparently by suicide; the body was found hanging in the closet.[17][18]

Psychopathy

VH1 producers stated that they did perform a criminal background check on Jenkins, however, his 2007 assault charge from Canada did not show up. [19] Mental health professionals in the media, including Beverly Hills based psychologist Dr. Sacha Nemcov have diagnosed Jenkins as a psychopath. They have also criticized the network for purposely selecting contestants with mental disorders in order to boost viewer ratings.[20]
