::Thanks. I wanted to merge material though, which would mean it would have to be restored behind a redirect for attribution and GFDL compliance purposes. There was also a very very long AN/I discussion related to these AfDs which ended up on it's own subpage. A Happy Birthday wish from the BRC and لennavecia

Chet!!! You're getting old! Not really, but still... HAPPY BIRTHDAY! So, I know you're not able to read this right now, but surely you'll check some time. Best, really, I suppose, considering I got you a present, but Jimbo stole it. :( I got you some chocolates, too, but after I opened them and took the pic, ... >_> Dude, they looked really good! So, yea, I ate them, BUT... srsly, I'll get you some more later, k? Anyway, uhm, I looked for a card for you on Commons, but dude, there was nothing good. Anyway, we miss you, and we hope you are well. Just know that while you may be out of sight, you are not out of mind. We talk about you often (and it's not even shit talk! I promise!! :D) and we're all excited for your epic return! So, from me and the BRC with love:

Update on Chet

Chet called me today to let me know how he's been doing and he gave me permission to share his story here on his talk page.

Chet grew up in an abusive home. He revealed this to the members of the BRC early last year. Following a particularly bad incident, he ran away, contacted me and, with the help of various members of the BRC, we contacted the local police, the child abuse hotline, and the Department of Health Services in his state. After a good deal of unnecessary and ridiculous drama and fighting, the involvement of his boss and pastor, and a call into the local judge, he was removed from his home and put into foster care.

Some of you may have seen the message (now partially oversighted) Chet left on my talk page in October, informing me of the group home he'd been placed in. Those of you who were clued in may recall that the woman I spoke to at the home claimed that Chet had "hacked the computer system" in order to leave that message. I figured that meant "he snuck onto the computer and logged on the internet when no one was looking." Apparently, however, he really did hack into their computer system, change the administrator passwords on three computers, and get past restrictions to access the internet. That's our boy! So, yea. Bad times from that. Then he tried to contact me after than, and they issued a court order prohibiting him from doing it again. :| Eep. I had no idea.

Anyway, he's now emancipated. He left his group home today and is on his way to United States Air Force basic military training where he'll be for eight weeks (hopefully no more), then he'll be off to tech school. He's going to give me the address to write him in boot camp once he gets that first phone call, so if anyone is compelled to write him while he's there (which, having been through it, I can't express how important it is to hear your name during mail call... the more times, the better!), let me know on my talk page and I'll be sure to get that address to you.

He's very happy, extremely excited to be starting his life and experiencing—for the first time in his life—some freedom. Well, actually, strike that. Military life doesn't really qualify as freedom, but you get the idea. If you would like to talk to him, I can pass your phone number on to him. If you don't trust me with your digits, then you're SOL until he gets back here. So, other than that, there's details on his parents, but it's disappointing news, so I'll just skip it. If you have questions, let me know. لennavecia 01:04, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. Chet sends his love and gratitude to the_undertow, Bullzeye, Astral Enigma, Mike H, hmwith, and east718.

I really hope you get on well with everything you try in life, and I hope you enjoy your training and time with the USAF. I also hope that you eventually get back onto Wikipedia sooner rather than later - you can cut the drama and have a slice. We need someone to burn that cake.  GARDEN  22:12, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Good luck, Chet. As an ex-BRC member, I already knew (about his history; I had left before it got this bad) and I'm glad that he's all-right now. Especially after the shit he went through. I have to agree, the BRC is actually a good thing. It's a good thing he was able to rely on us/them, and vice-versa. Again, good luck! :) Sceptre (talk) 22:44, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Another update

Chet text messaged me today to let me know he had landed in San Antonio, thus he is now beginning eight weeks of basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base. When I was in, flights started on Thursday and our first phone call was, I believe, Sunday. Since he has apparently started on a Tuesday, I'm not sure when to expect his mail address. By Sunday, at least, hopefully earlier. So again, if you are interested in sending him a letter or a few, drop your sig here and I'll get it to you. لennavecia 04:15, 6 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

*SNUGGLES*

I just realized this morning that I have a letter I wrote to you, but never mailed. I feel stupid now. Basic points from the letter:

  1. I resigned my adminship the end of January and got it back the beginning of April to do BLP work. And, just so you know, I requested my bit back from EVula via cellular text message... cause that's how I roll. XD My reason for coming back when I did (as I planned to take a longer break) was basically to spite Raul654.
  2. WP:OTRS.
  3. You should have gotten shittons of letters, but I'm disappointed to know most people who promised to write (see my talk page) did not.
  4. Your handwriting is extremely difficult to read.
  5. What job are you going into?

That's pretty much it. There were some more personal details in the letter, but nothing of much importance. Basic military job info about myself and another BRC member. We'll talk about it later.

Glad you're doing well, buddy! <3 So proud of you... I knew you'd do well. لennavecia 22:28, 28 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Yes I was rather disappointed at the turnout of letters, but now I've graduated so it doesn't really matter. My handwriting does suck... especially when I write fast, and by flashlight ;). I'm going into Computer Operations, which was my first choice, I'll be going to Keesler AFB, in Biloxi, MS on Monday for tech school which is 12 weeks.
Anyways I did appreciate the letters you wrote, and the few people you were able to get to write, as you know it means a lot to get mail in BMT. Thank you for everything. --Coffee // have a cup // ark // 15:07, 4 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

*GLOMP!!!*

COFFEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!

Just like stabbing lara here, I have a letter mostly composed, that i have not had a chance to finish and mail :( (I know i am terrible). But what the hell, GREAT TO SEE YOU BACK! I was off the grid this weekend, and only logged on to wiki now. Thats some great news I am returning to.

My letter was a bit more depressing though, with all the deaths and scandals :P

In any case, I'm very proud of you and glad to know you are doing well. Keep us posted on your status. Next time we intend to send you letters, we'll ask people to drop little notes in PM/channel and then consolidate them and mail them out. People are just way too lazy to write a full sized letter and then put it in an envelope and then mail it... jerks. Benders Game 15:03, 29 June 2009 (UTC) (formerly Lucifer_Cat)[reply]

Okie dokie: Escape the Fate - should I have protected this for longer than 24 hours?, or perhaps not at all? (it was on RFPP). — Ched :  ?  16:54, 12 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
My advice here would have been to not protect it, there aren't a lot of edits to the page per day, and the amount of vandalism was about 1-2 a day, which can be handled pretty well by huggle users. Basically my rule is if there are several IPs and non-confirmed users vandalizing an article more than twice every 3-4 hours, usually with some recurrence it merits protection, something like this for example. The usual length for semi-protections is about 1 week, so that people don't have to ask for it to be protected every other day. Eventually it will come natural as to whether it should be protected and how long. Hope that helps. --Coffee // have a cup // ark // 20:40, 12 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, actually, that helps a lot. Policies and guidelines don't always give you numbers to work with - so practical experience is something I value greatly. Thanks Chet, it helps a lot. ;) — Ched :  ?  21:18, 13 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Some users have decided to try and relaunch the spotlight project, and I am informing all users that were on the previous list of participants.

We thought that, rather than discuss it, it would be more effective to simply start, and try to make it work again. Therefore, we are currently working on an article.

Anyone is welcome to get involved, so please come to the #wikipedia-spotlight channel on the freenode IRC network (see the IRC tutorial for help with IRC). You can get instant access using freenode webchat.
