The All India Women's Conference (AIWC)

AIWC was founded in 1927 "to function as an organization dedicated to the upliftment and betterment of women and children". The organization continues its mission and has since diversified into various social and economic issues concerning women. In the 80th year of service to the nation, over 1,56,000 members in more than 500 branches of AIWC across the country carry on the work zealously with selfless dedication. AIWC is recognized the world over as a premier organization working for women's development and empowerment.[1]

Mission


AIWC Was registered in 1930 under Societies Registration Act, XXI of 1860. (No. 558 of 1930) The main objectives of the organization are:

  • To work for a society based on the principle of social justice, personal integrity and equal rights and opportunities for all.
  • To secure recognition of the inherent right of every human being to work and to achieve the essentials of life, which should not be determined by accident of birth or sex but by planned social distribution.
  • To support the claim of every citizen to the right to enjoy basic civil liberties.
  • To stand against all separatist tendencies and to promote greater national integration and unity.
  • To work actively for the general progress and welfare of women and children and to help women utilize to the fullest, the Fundamental Right conferred on them by the Constitution of India.
  • To work for permanent international amity and world peace.

Activities and Programmes


  • Literacy and Education:

One of the main objectives of AIWC was woman education and it remains a primary concern even today. The literacy campaign was intensified in 1996 by intiating nonformal education programmes for school drop out and literacy programmes for adult woman with craft training through its branches.[2]

  • The Socio-Economic Programme:

AIWC started programmes for capacity building and skill development by giving financial support for entrepreneurial endeavours such as processing solar drying etc.

  • Micro Credit Program:

Microcredit schemes for eradicating poverty among woman in rural areas. Self help groups have been identified for mobilization of saving among woman management of credit of credit and encouraging small business enterprises.

  • Health family Welfare and Population Management:

AIWC is actively involved in organizing health comps, awareness programmes, antenatal, care, immunization of programmes though its branches all over he country. AIWC conducted “Training of trainers” programmes for prevention of and protection from prevention of and protection from STIs, HIV /AIDS among woman in low-risk groups for members of its branches. The Outreach programme for awareness has become a very important part of the AIWC health programme.[3]

  • Rural energy:

AIWC was identified as a Nodal Agency by the Ministry of non conventional energy resources in 1989 to Improved the Improved Chullah program and biogas development programme. AIWC conducts programmes on renewable among woman at the grassroot level and to also use these technologies for economic self sufficiency.

  • Legislative Reforms:

AIWC has been represented on committees set up for legal reforms and amendments framed for women's welfare. The Legal Cell helps women who are victims of social and domestic violence. Free legal advice is provided and counseling for women in distress helps woon. Consultant to national Commission for Women for legal issues.

  • Textile printing:

A socio economic project run by AIWC was started in 1976 for training and to provide employment to woman and girls fro low socio economic sector. This programmes has also been extended to some branches.

  • Computer Training Centre:

AIWC started its computer training center in 1996 as a vocational course for capacity building among woman and training students for the one year “O” level diploma course recognized by DoEACC. This center has also been accepted by IGNOU as their center for degree courses. At present there are over 350 students in different computer programmes in this center. AIWC branches also run computer programmes with 90% placement of students in jobs.[4]

  • Activities - MCM Library:

It is well know Research and Reference Library on woman studies. The library has a large number of books on contemporary interest like Environment Education and literacy progammes microcredit and microfinance training manuals for training of traines for Adolescent life skill development HIV/ AIDs training for prevention and protection panchayat adult Adult leadership programme microcredit for poverty reduction health and programmes etc.More than 8000 books(Fiction non fiction history biography woman issues legal awareness etc).Reading room with leading journals periodicals and newspapers.Documentation centre with press clipping reports articles photographs on various topics like woman children environment literacy legislation violence against woman and several other topice of interest.Resource Centre papers correspondence reports of various projects seminars etc pertaining to AIWC from 1927.Portrait Gallery of photographs of past presidents of AIWC.

Projects


  • IGNOU Action Research Pilot project on Gender Empowerment through green technology Two programme are going on one in Trivandrum another is in Delhi.
  • Two days Legal Awareness programme funded by National Commission for Women in September, 2008
  • One day Seminar on ROLE OF WOMEN IN PROMOTION COMMUNAL HARMONY AND NATIONAL INTEGRATION on in six different branches Jammu, Delhi, Bijnor, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Cuttack and Bangalore funded by National Foundation for Communal Harmony.
  • A Project on Plastic Recycling unit with financial assitance from the Ministry of Environment, Govt. of NCT of Delhi is alloted to South West Delhi Women's Association branch in Delhi. Machines have been installed at Palam Gaon. Training to operate machine is over.
  • Preject on setting up of herbals gardens in 100 Schools in different states is under process. It is supported by National Medicinal Plants Board.
  • Project on Vocational training- Computer and Beauty Culture has started since last month in Rithala Village. It is going on in collaboration with NDPL.
  • Project for Sensitization & alternate vocation for women Bidi worker is supported by World Health Organisation. Two days TOT programme will be held at Head office in february. This will be followed by four days Awareness Workshop in Six states.
  • Healing with a "Ayurveda Treatment and Massage Training Center"
