By the 1970s, Colinton had expanded rapidly and the existing school was not large enough to cope with demand for school places. A new school, Bonaly Primary, was opened in 1976, with a catchment area covering most of Colinton. |

Although it was intended to completely replace the older school, Bonaly Primary was never large enough to accommodate all the school’s pupils and the original school premises, at Thorburn Road, continued in use as an annex for the nursery and infant classes.
