As an author, she was interested in the history of the German migration to the US in the 18th century and published two books and numerous newspaper and magazine articles documenting the history, lives, and politics of this German-American community. Mathilde Schley was born on ???, ? 1864, as the first of nine children to German Imigrants in Horicon, Wisconsin.

She attended elementary school in Mayville and Juneau, high school at ?, and continued to study art at ?.
