History

Edna Y. Schwartz created a fine and performing arts summer program for women at Belvoir Terrace in 1954. Her daughter and grand-daughter are the current directors/owners, and have carried on the tradition of emphasizing individual development, program excellence, and building friendships.

Belvoir Terrace is an historic site, build by Rotch & Tilden between 1888-1890 for Morris K. Jesup, and landscaped by Frederick Law Olmstead. In the early 1920's, John Shepherd purchased and renovated the property as a summer retreat. Now, as a summer camp, the current owners have preserved the great lawn, wooded paths, and imported trees. They continue to restore the mansion while carefully developing new facilities.

"Among the great estates, Belvoir Terrace is one of the best examples of an estate that maintains a reasonable balance between active use and preservation. The balance is attributable to the current owner's singular knowledge of building preservation standards, adherence to a maintenance plan, and to the estate's successful re-use as a summer arts camp. The estate is itself an important focal point on Cliffwood Street." [2]

Notable alumni include Natascia Diaz who went on to Broadway and California[3], Alyssa Epstein (a Rockette dancing with Chet Walker), Allison Charney (opera, soprano)[4], Stacey Lorinczi (jeweler) [5], Dana Levin (painter)[6] , Crista Villella along with Jeannette and Patricia Delgado (Miami City Ballet). And lastly, Terra Naomi, an alternative/rock/pop artist, attended Belvoir Terrace. [7]

Camp Life

Camp Belvoir Terrace specializes in training youth in the arts, such as theatre, music, dance and sports skills. Girls in grades 3-11 select their own program and are placed in small classes organized by age and skill level. The daily schedule allows for girls to take five classes on an alternating day schedule. The camp councilors encourage the youngest girls to select a diverse schedule of ten different activities, and therby discover their hidden talents. On the other hand, campers can concentrate on building a set of skills that interests them the most, including horseback riding and tennis. And no pre-requisite skill is required. All campers enjoy great accommodations in either the main house for younger girls, with 2 live in counselors, and the older girls live in dorms. Family style meals are served with salad bars, and the girls can relax in the main house.

Kunst

Campers can explore the various arts, or get totally immersed in what they enjoy the most. This includes, but is not limited to drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, videography, fashion and jewelry. Artists can major in studio art with several art classes daily or it can be an elective for girls focusing on dance, music, or theater. Small classes of six to eight girls working with MFA artist teachers guarantees progress and excitement in the studios. fr[8]
