Dear Sir
Striking Distance is a 1993 film starring Bruce Willis, Sarah Jessica Parker, Dennis Farina and Tom Sizemore. It was written and directed by Rowdy Herrington.
I am a Sergeant in the US Army. I got your address off the web. I have a very unusual hobby. I write to famous people to see if they will be kind enough to respond. I particularly enjoy writing to World War II veterans. Over the years, I have gotten replies from so many. I have gotten replies from men who won the Medal Of Honor, who were on the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor, who were Jimmy Doolittle's Raiders or Pappy Boyington's Black Sheep. I treasure every one and would love to add your name to the list. The young men and women in the service today haven't forgotten you. We are proud to pick up the torch and carry on the good fight for you have given us such a sterling example to follow. I think of men like you every day whenever I put on my uniform to go to work. I promise to do a good job for my country and not to let you down. The challenges the military faces today are so different but no less dangerous then the ones you faced. We have technology and weapons that you could only dream of in your war. However, it is still the good old-fashioned guts, character and patriotism you wonderful men of Pearl Harbor and The Battle Of The Bulge showed that still brings us to victory. We cannot forget that. I am glad that God has let you live such a long life because we need men of iron and character like you now more then ever. Kids especially need role models. They read about history in their textbooks, but you helped to write it as a living breathing part of it. I am glad that there are movies like Band Of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan so they can appreciate your great sacrifice. You truly are our greatest generation. You grew up in crushing poverty during the Great Depression suffering hardships our spoiled generation can only dream of. Then you had to go off and fight the most terrible war this world has ever known. It was the one war that we had to win at all costs. You answered freedom's call in its greatest hour of need and did magnificently. You saved freedom and democracy for all time. I was so happy last year when they dedicated that beautiful memorial in Washington. Did you happen to attend? I only wish they could have dedicated it in 1945 when ALL of you could have been there to enjoy it. I served in the first Gulf War when I was in the Army National Guard and learned the hard way to respect what you did. I thought in my ignorance that three and a half months at war was forever while you men had three and a half YEARS at war. I remember when we came home, there were some WWII vets handing out flags at the airport. I went up to one and thanked him. He just looked at me and said "Its nothing son our war was just a little longer thats all". I will never, ever forget that. I am sorry sir that you had to see ANOTHER terrible day where our nation was deliberately attacked on 9/11. So many compared that to Pearl Harbor. I am also sorry you have to see the terrible war killing our young soldiers even as I type these words. However, I bet you would join up all over again without a second thought. I read of your great service as a glider pilot in WWII. I think it is great how you served our nation so well even after you retired from the military. You are a patriot and a hero of the highest caliber. Sir I hope with all my heart that this letter brings a little cheer into your day. I would love to hear back. Good luck and may God bless you
