Benny Castillo (born on July 15, 1966 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and raised in the Bronx, New York is a former professional baseball player. He attended Park West High School where he was coached by the late Mr. Paul Gordon which was a mentor and father figure to both Castillo and future MLB player Devon White. Castillo played American Legion baseball with the Youth Service program out of the Parade Grounds in Brooklyn, NY ran by Mel Zitter. The program has produced a long list of MLB players including Manny Ramirez, Shawn Duston and Julio Lugo.

Playing

As a freshman Castillo attended and played for coach Steve Kring at Central State University (Ohio). As a Sophomore he transferred to The Community College of Baltimore (coached by Elliott Oppenheimer) where he was drafted in the 4th round of the 1986 MLB draft. Opting to pass up pro ball at the time, Castillo enrolled at Oklahoma State University (OSU) where he was coached by Gary Ward. As a junior in 1987 OSU reached the championship game in the College World Series vs. Stanford University. Losing 9 to 5 to the former White Sox pitcher Jack McDowell. Castillo began his professional playing career in 1988 with the Detroit Tigers organization. A well-traveled player, he played for such teams as the [Appalachian League's] Bristol Tigers (1988), the [South Atlantic League's] Fayetteville Generals (1988-1989), the [Pioneer League's] Salt Lake City Trappers (1991), the [Florida State League's] Charlotte Rangers 1992), the [Texas League's] Tulsa Drillers (1993), the [Eastern League's] Canton/Akron Indians (1995). In 454 games in the minor leagues, he had a batting average of .259, on-base percentage of .346 and a slugging percentage of .407. He hits 36 home runs during his playing time. [1]

Castillo received a bachelor's degree in Social Work from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 2000. Later in 2007 he received a Master degree in Education from the University of Sioux Falls.
