Hannah Whelan (born 1 July 1992 in Singapore) is a British artistic gymnast from Stockport. She was selected for the Great British 2008 Summer Olympics team and finished ninth in the team event in Beijing.[1] As of 2011[update], she is ranked 1st in Great Britain[2] She was the shortest and lightest British Olympian in the 2008 Olympics in any sport. Hannah now has two British Championship titles to her name, won consecutively in 2010 and 2011.
Career
Hannah began her gymnastics when she was five years old. She has been a member of the Central Manchester Gymnastics Club and the Stockport-based Vernon Gymnastic Club.[3] Now she is coached by Amanda Kirby at the City of Liverpool Gymnastics Club.
She is currently training for the American Cup in Jacksonville, the World Cup in Paris, the European Championships in Berlin and the Glasgow Grand Prix in April. In 2011, the was named Liverpool Young Sports Person of the Year.[4]
Personal life
Despite missing much of her final school year due to training, Hannah achieved seven B's and a C in her GCSE exams.[5] She is currently attending John Moores University in Liverpool.[6]
