Pelym (Russian: Пелым) is an urban locality) (a work settlement) in Sverdlovsk Oblast, Russia, administratively subordinated to the town of Ivdel. Population: 3,708 (2002 Census).[1]

History

Around 1590 it was the seat of a Vogul chief called Ablegirim or Abdul Kerim. He was defeated by the Russians in 1592-1594 in order to pacify one of the routes into Siberia. He and his family was taken to Moscow as hostages. Pelym was built in 1592 on the site of his former residence. The builders took with them the family of Ignaty Khripunov—the first Russians to be exiled to Siberia.[2] Both Biron and his rival Münnich were exiled here.

Administrative and municipal status

Administratively, Pelym and thirty-seven rural localities are subordinated to the Town of Ivdel—an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts.

Municipally, Pelym, along with four other rural localities, is incorporated as Pelym Urban Okrug. Ivdel and the other thirty-three rural localities are independently incorporated as Ivdelsky Urban Okrug.

Economy

A Gazprom office and an airport are located in Pelym.
